Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Recap Season 1 Episode 4: Spaghetti vs. Fries

Jamie’s mission this week focused on obtaining funding from the community to be able to sustain the lunch programs and Jamie’s Kitchen after he leaves Huntington. Although successful, his fund-raising dinner didn’t raise as much as Jamie would have liked. His primary target was Doug Shields, communications directors at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Shields seemed very concerned about how ABC would be marketing Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and how America would perceive their community.

Ruby Recap Season 3 Episode 9: Thanksgiving Dinner

It’s Thanksgiving this week on Ruby. And you know what that means? Serious temptations. So, Ruby’s plan was to have two Thanksgivings, one for her and one for the others.

But, even this sensible idea runs into a stumbling block, as her friends want the traditional pumpkin pie, which Ruby cannot have around, because it was a trigger food when she was at her heaviest.

After Ruby invites her trainers over for the Thanksgiving dinner, the show moves on to her in a therapy session discussing ideas for how to handle dinner. Her therapist emphasizes avoiding “minimizing” eating, which is when Ruby would say “I’ll just have a little of this.”

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Recap Season 1 Episode 3: Jamie’s Kitchen

This week’s episode of Food Revolution centered around introducing the community of Huntington, West Virginia to Jamie’s Kitchen, where he offered free cooking lessons and advice on meal planning. Rather than working with one school at a time or one family at a time, Jamie wants to impact the entire community.

The episode starts with Jamie appearing on Rod’s radio show again. Rod continues to express skepticism about Jamie’s revolution and how the show will portray Huntington. Throughout the episode, Jamie continues to speak positively about Huntington and its 50,000 residents. Jamie and Rod make a bet on whether or not Jamie can teach 1,000 people to cook in the next five days. Rod states that if Jamie can bring 1,000 people in to his kitchen, Rod will buy Jamie a beer and start helping him in his cause by spreading the word.

Ruby Recap Season 3 Episode 8: Ruby’s Plastic Surgery Dilemma

This week on Ruby, we open with her worries about the excessive flab left hanging under her arms, which has become a bigger issue since losing half of her body weight. So, she starts thinking about plastic surgery.

Ruby’s ex-boyfriend Denny calls her with a proposition to join him on a trip to Los Angeles. She lived with Denny in L.A. when the two were dating. Ruby gets on her webcam with Brittnay to see if she can help her find a plastic surgeon.

Ruby Recap Season 3 Episode 7: Ruby’s Australian Adventure

This week, Ruby heads to Australia to promote her book – “Ruby’s Diary.” After she lands and heads to her hotel, Ruby immediately sets a goal to lose 10 pounds on her trip Down Under. I have to admit that is a little bit of a downer that she has to be thinking about losing weight when she’s on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, but such is life for Ruby.

An Australian magazine was promoting her book, and they took her to a beach in Sydney for a photo shoot. It was then that Ruby revealed that she hired a trainer to help her lose the 10 pounds on her trip. (more…)

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Recap Season 1 Episode 2: From the Mouths of Teens

This week Food Revolution starts with the radio host that has given Jamie a hard time since his first day in Huntington, predicting that Jamie’s revolution will fail. He stated that the residents of Huntington will be kind to Jamie while he is there, but will revert to their previous dietary habits once he returns to England.

Jamie continues his experiment in the elementary school, continuing to clash with cook Alice, but others seem to be getting on board. Jamie is also allowed to take over food service in one of the high schools, where the cooks seem to be more supportive. With the teenagers, Jamie takes a different strategy, asking for volunteers to be ambassadors of change and help to convince the other students of the need for a food revolution. (more…)

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Recap Season 1 Episode 1: Chicken Nuggets

If you missed the sneak preview of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, hopefully you were able to catch up during the first hour of the two-hour season premiere last Friday. Like most of today’s reality television programs, Food Revolution does a good job of catching you up; however, not in an irritatingly repetitive way.

One of the educational highlights of this episode was the chicken nugget experiment Jamie conducted with a handful of elementary school children. Jamie took a whole chicken, identified the prime cuts, and then showed the children how the “bits you don’t like” are used to create “processed food” like chicken nuggets. Despite the shrieks and “eewwws” during the process, the children were more than willing to eat the finished product to Jamie’s dismay and shock, since in England he received the opposite response from children when he conducted the same experiment. Ruby Recap Season 3 Episode 6: 5 Changes To Get Under 300 lbs.

This week, Ruby addresses a new health issues – her eyesight. When she visits her eye doctor, she finds out that he recommends that she get bifocals, a dreaded sign of aging.

More changes are in store for Ruby as she looks to break the 300-pound barrier in her weight loss journey. When consulting with her therapist about how to achieve that goal, she suggests that Ruby give up or change five things in her life to break through the barrier.

The first thing that Ruby addresses is a change in her workout. So, she decides to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Then, when she visits her doctor, the doc recommends giving up diet cola and taking up juicing vegetables. This didn’t go over well with Ruby. Then it gets worse when friend and roommate Jeff also suggests giving up diet soda.

Ruby and Jeff test out, well fumble with, her new juicer, and they barely get through it without a major catastrophic event. She practically gags on the carrot/cucumber/celery concoction. But, when she gets the bright idea to microwave the juice, she ends up with a soup that she actually enjoys.

Jeff stayed on the offensive, and suggested another change. Ruby’s favorite lounging chair was meant to accommodate her when she was 700 pounds. Now it looks over-sized. So, Jeff suggested losing the chair, and getting a replacement as a way of letting go a little of her past.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Sneak Preview

The sneak preview of Food Revolution opened with Jamie saying goodbye to his wife and children to spend three months in Huntington, WV helping them renovate how they eat. From the start, Jamie spoke positively about the town of 50,000. Jamie’s first stop in Huntington was a radio program where he interacted with an unimpressed host, despite Jamie’s explanation that Huntington was deemed the unhealthiest town in America by a government statistic based on death.

It is not surprising that Jamie chose to start his revolution in a school, given his experience in his own country with Jamie’s Ministry of Food. His first day in the school, Jamie observed and asked questions. As he toured the school kitchen, Jamie stated that many restaurants in England would be jealous of the space and equipment they had, and was shocked to learn that the ovens were used primarily for reheating and rarely for cooking. As he had to ask the cooks to identify the food they serve school children, Jamie said in an aside that children in South Africa are getting better food than American school children. Despite the defensiveness and dissent of the cooks, Jamie remains positive and focuses on their strengths. Right as I was thinking how upsetting the entire situation was, Jamie said that he felt like crying. (more…)

Ruby Recap Season 3 Episode 5: Digging Further into the Past

In this week’s episode of Ruby, our southern belle confesses to having recurring nightmares, and she thinks it might be a good idea to videotape herself sleeping.

Ruby attended another one of her regular “Women’s Fat Night,” this time with special guest Tennie McCarthy, founder and CEO of Shades of Hope, a counselor who brings up the pattern of heavy women who eat as a way to fill a void for those who lacked a healthy relationship with their fathers. This was pretty evident in the women who attended the meeting. McCarthy refers to it as “Father Hunger.”

Next, Ruby meets up with Ron, her private investigator who she hired to help find the mysterious “Dr. Duke” from her childhood. In a previous Ruby recap, a commenter on our blog, who claimed to be a relative of hers, mentioned that his name is actually Dr. Dukes. The mistake is corrected in this week’s show, as Ron says that he has found him, and that he is not actually a doctor, but a physician’s assistant… and his name is Dukes. (more…)

Ruby Recap Season 3 Episode 4: The Beauty Pageant

Ruby is not only taking charge of her own weight loss, she’s now mentoring others. In this week’s episode of Ruby, on the Style Network, Ruby and her so-called fashion guru Anthony go shopping for a new dress, when they stumble upon a brochure for a plus-size teen beauty pageant called Plus Teen U.S.A.

The pamphlet sparked a memory of a teen girl named Christina that Ruby met at a weight loss camp. This girl was so damaged by the ribbing she took by her peers that she dropped out of school and began being home-schooled.

So, Ruby recruits Christina to enter the pageant, which is in Texas, as a way to boost her self-esteem and get her out of her shell. There’s a short conversation to convince her to enter. But, when Ruby said she’d come too, Christina instantly acted more open to the idea. (more…)
