{"id":101188,"date":"2014-12-24T06:00:01","date_gmt":"2014-12-24T11:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/?p=101188"},"modified":"2014-12-18T16:38:19","modified_gmt":"2014-12-18T21:38:19","slug":"produce-over-pills-your-doctors-newest-rx-option-comes-from-your-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/12\/produce-over-pills-your-doctors-newest-rx-option-comes-from-your-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Produce Over Pills: Your Doctor&#8217;s Newest Rx Option Comes from the Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"vegetable prescription\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/12\/produce-over-pills-your-doctors-newest-rx-option-comes-from-your-garden\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-101222\" alt=\"vegetable-RX\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/vegetable-RX.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/vegetable-RX.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/vegetable-RX-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was Hippocrates who first said &#8220;Let thy food be thy medicine.&#8221; And while it may have taken a few thousand years for this to really catch on, doctors in New York City have finally started applying this concept to their patients.<\/p>\n<p>NYC docs involved in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholesomewave.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wholesome Wave<\/a><\/strong> program have now started writing prescriptions for fruits and vegetables for their patients battling obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high-cholesterol, and other weight-related diseases.\u00a0Instead of drugs for weight loss, doctors provide these patients with a \u201cprescription\u201d of sorts to eat more vegetables and fruits.<\/p>\n<p>It is this program\u2019s goal to empower under-served and low-income communities with access to healthy foods in efforts to manage obesity and its resulting health conditions.\u00a0In recent coverage from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/01\/prescribing-vegetables-not-pills\/?smid=fb-share&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a><\/strong>, success stories are popping up throughout the 1200 different low-income families enrolled in the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, or FVRx, in four major hospitals throughout New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Most astonishing is that after just four months in the program, 40% of children successfully lowered their <strong><a title=\"BMI calculator\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/resources\/health-calculator\/\">body-mass index<\/a><\/strong> (BMI) once they ate their prescribed fruits and veggies.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each month, patients meet with their doctors and nutritionists to review their FVRx, check BMI, and talk more about developing a healthy diet. Some patients can even meet once a week with their support team, depending on the individual case.<\/p>\n<p>Participants are provided with nutrition education,<strong> <a title=\"free healthy recipes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/recipes\/\">recipe ideas<\/a><\/strong>, and most notably, tokens redeemable for healthy produce at local farmers markets. These can be used in addition to food stamps, which are <strong><a title=\"Food Stamps at Farmers Markets\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/farmers-markets-in-all-50-states-accept-your-ebt-snap-cards-some-double-your-money\/\">accepted throughout farmers markets in all 50 states<\/a><\/strong>. Patients leave with a prescription to fill, which is then converted into Health Bucks redeemable at 140 farmers markets in the city. Participants get $1 per day per family member, meaning a family of four gets $28 of free produce per week. That&#8217;s enough to help not only the patient in the program get healthier, but the entire family!<\/p>\n<p>The movement to improve access to healthy foods to under-served communities is a worthwhile one, but most families need this extra push.\u00a0\u201cFor people today with income shortages, getting good food like high-quality fruits and vegetables is a big problem,\u201d said Michel Nischan, founder of Wholesome Wave, who established the partnership with local farmers. \u201cA movement to restrict food stamps to healthy foods is well-meaning, but it doesn\u2019t work in many areas where <strong><a title=\"7-eleven food deserts\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/new-studies-show-food-deserts-arent-the-cause-of-american-obesity\/\">7-Eleven is the main source of people\u2019s food<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0The local farmers benefit, too. They are reimbursed for the full value of their goods from grants and community-based nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t quality for the program, that doesn&#8217;t mean this prescription isn&#8217;t relevant. Everyone is encouraged to eat more vegetables and fresh produce, (<strong><a title=\"13 servings of fruits and vegetables\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/07\/sip-a-rainbow-smoothie-to-deliciously-tackle-your-daily-fruit-and-vegetable-serving-needs\/\">13 servings per day<\/a><\/strong>!), especially if overcoming any diagnosed health condition.
