The media often misreport health information&#8230; so much that the National Institutes of Health sponsors a conference called <a title=\"medmediacourse\" href=\"http:\/\/medmediacourse.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Medicine in the Media&#8221;<\/a> in order to help journalists understand how to accurately report health research. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Food and nutrition misinformation can have harmful effects on the health, well-being and economic status of consumers. The American Dietetic Association&#8217;s position paper on misinformation says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>News reports rarely provide enough context for consumers to interpret or apply the advice given and <a title=\"eatright.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eatright.org\/cps\/rde\/xchg\/ada\/hs.xsl\/advocacy_adar0202_ENU_HTML.htm\" target=\"_blank\">preliminary findings often attract unmerited and misleading attention<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I believe it is crucial that Americans have accurate information based on  science and evidence.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That&#8217;s why I am joining leading experts in exercise and weight  management and taking strong exception to assertions that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/exercise-fuels-hunger-not-weight-loss\/\">exercise can  inhibit weight loss<\/a> by over-stimulating the appetite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Responding to a statement recently published  <a title=\"exercise myths\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/exercise-fuels-hunger-not-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_self\">online and in print<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">John Jakicic, Ph.D., FACSM, said <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere is strong evidence from the majority of the scientific  literature that physical activity is an important component for initial  weight loss.&#8221; <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He stressed: &#8220;T<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">he statement \u2018<em>in  general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless<\/em>\u2019 is not  supported by the scientific evidence when there is adherence to a  sufficient dose of physical activity in overweight and obese  adults.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jakicic chairs a committee on obesity prevention and  treatment for the<\/span> <a title=\"acsm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acsm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">American  College of Sports Medicine<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(ACSM)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"weight loss tape\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/experts-debunk-recent-weight-loss-exercise-myth\/#more-10780\" target=\"_self\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10841\" title=\"diet measuring tape\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/diet-measuring-tape.jpg\" alt=\"diet measuring tape\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a>According to Jakicic and other experts,  overwhelming evidence belies the assertion that exercise doesn\u2019t  necessarily help people lose weight and may even make the task  harder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAgain, it is clear in this regard that  physical activity is one of the most important behavioral factors in  enhancing weight loss maintenance and improving long-term weight loss  outcomes,\u201d Jakicic said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recent research, published in  2026, showed a high dose of physical activity (275 minutes above  baseline levels) contributed to the greatest observed weight loss after  a 24-month intervention. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The scientific literature  includes additional evidence to support physical activity, adding that a  growing body of literature suggests the <a title=\"exercise benefits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/12\/what-can-exercise-do-for-me\/\" target=\"_self\">importance of physical activity<\/a> to improve long-term weight loss following <a title=\"weight loss surgery\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/topics\/weight-loss-surgery\/\" target=\"_self\">bariatric surgery<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another noted expert and ACSM member, Timothy  Church, M.D., Ph.D., described how his professional opinions were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span>misrepresented in a recent news article. According to Church, the  article should have touched on the following key concepts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"weight loss maintenance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/mike-morellis-weight-loss-maintenance-after-biggest-loser\/\" target=\"_self\">Weight maintenance<\/a> is different from weight  loss, and should have been discussed. Virtually all people who lose  weight and keep it off are exercising to maintain weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Comments about children and physical activity  were misleading. Studies have shown that kids are not necessarily more  active after school (and therefore need good in-school physical  education program), and that the focus with children should be on  physical activity and prevention of excess weight gain. (Adults,  however, more often must deal with losing excess weight.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Exercise and <a title=\"diet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/\" target=\"_self\">diet<\/a> go together. Weight  management is most successful when careful attention is given to both  physical activity and proper nutrition.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Janet Rankin, Ph.D., FACSM, an expert in  nutrition and exercise, supplemented the bountiful scientific evidence  with a simple observation: \u201cA practical response to the claim that  exercise makes you eat more and gain weight is to look around.\u00a0If  this were the case, wouldn\u2019t those who regularly exercise be the  fattest?\u00a0Obviously that isn\u2019t the  case.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I could not agree with her sentiments more. But I will add that several of my clients who are overweight or obese compete in half marathons, triathlons, and even marathons &#8212; and when they do, they want to eat healthier. The weight comes off. Most of my clients have lost two pounds a week and kept it off. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Think twice before you read.
