Not quite, but almost. And if you are someone who feels that the energy bar should be considered as a food group, then read on.

Energy bars run the span on the nutrition scale. Some are nothing more than a bunch of sugars and chocolate coating pumped up with a daily multivitamin and others rely on natural and whole ingredients to create a convenient and healthy on-the-go snack or meal replacement.

I confess: I’m an energy bar junkie. I don’t eat them all the time, but it’s my knee-jerk reaction to grab a new bar from off of the shelf, decode the nutrition label and sample away. But one of my main complaints about energy bars is their calorie content. Some of them pack more calories than a salad with grilled chicken breast or a McDonald’s hamburger. So when Promax, maker of the Promax Bar, contacted DietsInReview.com about their new line of mini protein energy bars that contained just 70 calories, I was anxious to test them out.

The new Promax 70 Calorie snack bar contains the same Promax protein blend of non-GMO soy protein and whey protein in addition to small amounts of vitamins and minerals. They do not contain high fructose corn syrup, which is an all-too-common ingredient in many energy bars and snack foods.

Each 70-calorie bar has five grams of protein, two grams of fat, seven grams of sugar and approximately eight percent of the essential vitamins and minerals. They currently come in three flavors: Cookies N’ Cream, Double Fudge Brownie and Nutty Butter Crisp.

I sampled the Nutty Butter Crisp. It has a thin coating of chocolate but a nice rich and crunchy peanut butter taste inside. In fact, the crunch of the Promax soy protein nuggets added a delightful textural surprise throughout the entire bar. In regards to size, they are small but you need to expect that when you’re eating a 70-calorie mini protein bar. My estimation puts the bars at a fingertip smaller than a singular Kit-Kat stick and a fingertip longer than a snack-size Snickers.

My comparison examples of candy bars should in no way mean to denote that the Promax 70 Calorie bars are candy bars. Well, they are sweet. They are chocolate-y and they are shaped like candy bars. But with a punch of protein, an absence of high fructose corn syrup and a dollup of vitamins and minerals, I give these appetizer-size bars a thumbs-up when you need a quick snack before a workout or just as a pick-me-up and don’t want the slug of calories that most full-size energy bars deliver.

Happy snacking!

While Promax Nutrition provided Heather Ashare with a sample product, this review is her own opinion and was not influenced or sponsored in any way.

The number of energy bars lining store shelves is almost as wide at the cereal aisle.
