Whether as a side to accompany an already delicious meal, or as the main course, a salad is light yet satisfying. And unlike most meals, it can be completely customized.<a title=\"salad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/05\/healthy-salad-recipes-for-national-salad-month\/\" target=\"_self\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19631\" title=\"salad\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/salad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>May is <a title=\"national salad month\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/05\/may-is-national-salad-month\/\" target=\"_self\">National Salad Month<\/a>, so we wanted to jump on the bandwagon and support this campaign for one of the healthiest meals around.<\/p>\n<p>Loaded with everything from greens and vegetables to nuts, fruits and lean proteins, a salad offers complete nutrition in one meal.<\/p>\n<p>Just like an unhealthy food, moderation should be practiced with salads, too. You can all too easily turn a light and healthy salad into a calorie bomb that&#8217;s no better than the burger you were actually craving. Keep your salads on the lighter side by:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Practicing <a title=\"portion sizes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/know-your-portion-sizes\/\" target=\"_self\">portion control<\/a><\/li>\n<li> Topping with grilled proteins instead of breaded and fried<\/li>\n<li> Skipping cheese or using a small amount of reduced-fat cheese<\/li>\n<li> Choosing oil-based dressings (i.e. vinaigrette) over cream-based (i.e. ranch) and serving them on the side<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can ensure that a healthy salad is always available to you by stocking your own &#8220;salad bar&#8221; at home. Things to keep in the pantry or to buy fresh each week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nuts like almonds, walnuts or pecans<\/li>\n<li>Dried fruit like apricots or cranberries (watch for added sugars)<\/li>\n<li>Olive oil and vinegars for homemade dressings<\/li>\n<li>A variety of vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Fruits like grapes, apples or strawberries<\/li>\n<li>Grilled chicken (just chop and keep in individual servings in the freezer)<\/li>\n<li>Greens like spinach, romaine, kale and baby spring greens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s really no rhyme or reason to preparing a salad, just load it up with the items you love and dig in.
