{"id":22772,"date":"2010-06-04T14:25:52","date_gmt":"2010-06-04T19:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/?p=22772"},"modified":"2010-06-06T19:46:36","modified_gmt":"2010-06-07T00:46:36","slug":"un-encourages-a-vegan-diet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/un-encourages-a-vegan-diet\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Encourages a Vegan Diet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"plant-based diet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/un-encourages-a-vegan-diet\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2071 alignleft\" title=\"veg-diet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/veg-diet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It may be that vegetarians and vegans are finally having their day in the limelight:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change,&#8221; says a just-released report issued by the UN.<\/p>\n<p>As the global population surges towards a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050, western tastes for diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable, says the report from United Nations Environment Programme&#8217;s (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The report goes on to say that &#8220;Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lead author of the report, Professor Edgar Hertwich\u00a0said: &#8220;Animal products cause more damage than [producing] construction minerals such as sand or cement, plastics or metals.
