I&#8217;d meant to lose weight before a rare visit to the in-laws and a long-awaited trip to Disney World. But I didn&#8217;t. A few months later, I was still fat and mortified when I attended my grandma&#8217;s 100th<br \/>\nbirthday party. All my thin relatives saw how fat I was because even a pair of black pants couldn&#8217;t hide my weight.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, I was hired to write a diet blog for a now-defunct website (ClubMom.com). I weighed 226 pounds. I ruled out counting calories and attending meetings. I&#8217;d been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (<a title=\"pcos\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/biggest-loser-brittany-on-her-2008-goal-bernies-snoring-and-saying-goodbye-to-jillian\/\" target=\"_self\">PCOS<\/a>) and chose the recommended <a title=\"low glycemic index\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/the-low-glycemic-index-diet\/\" target=\"_self\">low-glycemic index diet<\/a>. I changed my lifestyle&#8211;eliminating sugar and flour&#8211;and to my shock, my weight began to drop. After a few months, I added daily exercise. I felt great. My weight stabilized at 170 pounds and I was zipping up size 12 jeans. I had a walking buddy and got up every morning at 6 a.m. to walk a hilly 3.5 mile course.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Even though I wanted to lose another twenty pounds, I felt confident, triumphant, absolutely certain that I&#8217;d conquered my weight problem. That was that. I&#8217;d made a lifestyle change and I easily maintained it for about two years.<\/p>\n<p>Then I started working full-time. My last shift ended every night at midnight. After a couple months, I quit my morning walk, choosing sleep over exercise. Some stressful issues affected our family. Inexplicably, I started eating refined carbs, even though I knew my body does not handle them well. My life changed and my &#8220;new&#8221; lifestyle no longer fit. Instead of adapting, I embraced my old bad habits.<\/p>\n<p>And now I&#8217;m fat again.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s disheartening to regain weight, horrifying to face people who raved over your weight loss the first time around.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m finally regaining my equilibrium. I&#8217;m gearing up to start over again. This time, I&#8217;m gathering a team of supporters to hold me accountable through daily emails. I&#8217;ll be blogging. I&#8217;ll change my lifestyle, one healthy bite at a time.<\/p>\n<p>The only way to fail is to stop trying.
