The idea behind this is that weight above the waist adds additional and unnecessary stress, inflammation, and padding around your internal organs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">An increased amount of abdominal fat has been linked to several health complications (diabetes, heart disease, and stroke).<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>A recent <a title=\"belly fat risks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2008\/HEALTH\/conditions\/11\/12\/healthmag.waist.death.risk\/\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> conducted added early death to the list of complications.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><!--more--><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">European researchers followed about 360,000 participants for about 10 years in a large ongoing study called thee <span style=\"EN;\" lang=\"EN\">Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) health study<\/span>.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span><span style=\"EN;\" lang=\"EN\">During the follow-up period, 14,723 of the participants died.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>After researchers adjusted for overweight and obesity, measured by body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist-to-hip measurements, the found both independently associated with an increased risk for early death.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>T<\/span>his study was able to conclude that even those individuals, even with a normal BMI, that had excess stomach fat had <span style=\"EN;\" lang=\"EN\">about double the risk of dying prematurely as people with the least amount of belly fat. This death risk increased with waist circumference, whether the participants were overweight or not.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"EN;\" lang=\"EN\">Specifically, the study concluded that :<\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/measuring-waist.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2689\" title=\"measuring-waist\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/measuring-waist-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Men and women with the largest waists ( men &gt;40 inches and &gt;35 inches for women) had double the risk of premature death as men and women with the smallest waists (less than 34 inches for men and 28 for women). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Each 2-inch increase in waist circumference was associated with a 17% increase in mortality in men and a 13% increase in women. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Waist-to-hip ratio also strongly predicted mortality.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"center;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><strong>How do you tell if you have too much abdominal fat?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Measure your waist circumference: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Place a tape measure around your waist at the smallest point (usually just above the navel) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Ideal is men with a waist size under 40 inches and women under 35 inches <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"> <\/span><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\">Measure your waist-to-hip ratio:<\/span><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Measuring your waist at the smallest point and your hips at the widest point (usually at the widest part of the buttocks) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"10.0pt;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\">Divide the waist measurement by the hip measurement <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"AR-SA;\" lang=\"EN\">Ideal is men with a waist-to-hip ratio smaller than 0.9 and women under 0.8 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A pear-shaped build is \u201chealthier\u201d then an apple build.
