Here is an excerpt of that conversation.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong><em>What do you see as the main problem with the way Americans eat? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The current American diet is toxic. Processed foods and low-nutrient foods all contribute to food addiction. The more we\u00a0consume of these\u00a0low-nutrient foods that are\u00a0packed with white flour, sugar, additives\u00a0etc., the greater the inflammatory response\u00a0in our bodies. This inflammation\u00a0overwhelms our body&#8217;s natural detoxification mechanisms so that this toxic waste accumulates in our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>I call this toxic hunger. This sensation\u00a0is brought on by toxin-producing foods in our diet. And\u00a0when\u00a0we consume these\u00a0foods,\u00a0they produce feelings of physical and emotional discomfort. So, in order to stop the painful feelings, we eat again. And then again.<\/p>\n<p>Just like addicts, food has become a drug and we are constantly over-stuffing ourselves. We have become\u00a0completely disconnected from our body&#8217;s need for\u00a0an appropriate quantity of calories and the feeling of\u00a0true hunger.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>You suggest that for optimal health and long-lasting weight loss, we need to eat a diet rich in micro-nutrients. Can you explain what a diet like this looks like?<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/dr-joel-fuhrman-shows-how-to-live-disease-free\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27355\" title=\"eat for health one book\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/eat-for-health-one-book.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most Americans have been eating poorly for their whole lives. We currently have an epidemic of diabetes, obesity and certain cancers.\u00a0These diseases are\u00a0not just increasing in their prevalence, but they are\u00a0affecting us\u00a0younger and younger.<\/p>\n<p>We want to give people the opportunity to be healthy, but\u00a0in order to\u00a0be\u00a0healthy and offer your\u00a0body powerful protection against these conditions,\u00a0you have to do\u00a0more than just\u00a0cut back on eating red\u00a0meat. In order to\u00a0experience a dramatic reduction in your risk for weight-related conditions, you must cancer-proof your body and to do that, you have to eat the right foods and a lot of them, namely\u00a0vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>You also need to make beans, greens, berries, nuts and seeds diet staples in order\u00a0to arm your body with what it needs to repair the damage\u00a0already inflicted upon it\u00a0and renew itself. And it will take more than just five servings a day.<\/p>\n<p>I encourage everyone to have a big salad every day.\u00a0But be smart about the salad dressing you choose.\u00a0A 35-calorie bowl of vegetables can turn into a 500-calorie meal with the wrong kind\u00a0of dressing. Choose fresh ingredients like juices from fresh fruit like lemons and blood oranges, herbs,\u00a0garlic and infused vinegars for delicious and healthy salad dressings.<\/p>\n<p>Also, green vegetables, mushrooms and onions are the\u00a0most potent\u00a0cancer-fighting foods. Make these part of your regular diet to arm your body with the nutrients it needs to fight disease. This is especially true for women and their risk of breast cancer. Mushrooms have been clinically shown to have strong anti-cancer benefits for women and their risk of\u00a0breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>By following this plan, you&#8217;ll lose weight without counting calories as your body will naturally calibrate to its ideal weight.
