Image via The New York Times. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Army has long had rigorous fitness requirements, but today new recruits need to shape up more than ever. The top reason recruits are rejected by the Army is because they are overweight. \u201cWhat we were finding was that the soldiers we\u2019re getting in today\u2019s Army are not in as good shape as they used to be,\u201d Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling told <em><a title=\"Making Soldiers Fit to Fight, Without the Situps\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/31\/us\/31soldier.html?_r=4&amp;hp\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>. \u201cThis is not just an Army issue. This is a national issue.\u201d The problem the Army is facing reflects the <a title=\"Rise of Obesity in America\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/07\/obesity-numbers-rising-according-to-americas-future-2010\/\" target=\"_self\">rise of obesity in America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the Army has rolled out a new fitness program, designed to get recruits in shape. The new fitness regime has incorporated exercises from yoga and <a title=\"Benefits of Pilates\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/11-benefits-of-pilates\/\" target=\"_self\">pilates<\/a>, and is de-emphasizing old staples of Army physical training, like long runs and sit-ups. The new program is in use at five training posts, and has 145,000 participants.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Another of the program&#8217;s goals is to reduce the number of injuries related to unfit recruits being unprepared to take on strenuous activity. The new program has participants stretching more and increases in difficulty more gradually. It also begins with more <a title=\"core workout\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/core-sculptor\/\" target=\"_self\">core strengthening<\/a>. &#8220;It\u2019s more whole body,\u201d said First Lt.
