Here are two of the readers\u2019 favorite \u201cAsk Mary Q+As\u201d about metabolism and food.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask Mary: Which foods boost metabolism?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few specific foods and beverages have been shown to <a title=\"5 Ways to Spark Your Metabolism\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/5-ways-to-spark-your-metabolism\/\" target=\"_self\">boost metabolism<\/a> in research studies. They are hot red pepper (capsaicin), grapefruit, green tea, <a title=\"New Health Benefits of Coffee\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/new-health-benefits-of-coffee\/\" target=\"_self\">coffee<\/a> and other caffeinated foods, and even water. But keep in mind that the increased metabolism these foods provide is too small to really be meaningful. Newer understanding of the hormones that regulate feeding and appetite control show that \u201clifestyle factors&#8221; such as exercise and <a title=\"Importance of Sleep for Good Health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/importance-of-sleep-for-good-health\/\" target=\"_self\">sleep<\/a> influence metabolism above and beyond the actual number of calories they may save or burn. These include (but aren\u2019t limited to) <a title=\"A Beginner's Guide to Strength Training\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/a-beginners-guide-to-weight-training\/\" target=\"_self\">weight training<\/a> to build muscle, exercising aerobically for 30 minutes or more on most days, sleeping for 8-hours at night, and eating regular well-spaced meals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask Mary: Will ac\u0105i berries raise my metabolism?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The distributors of <a title=\"Acai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/Acai\/\" target=\"_self\">ac\u0105i (ah SAH ee) berries<\/a> claim they speed up your metabolism to help you burn fat and lose weight, but don\u2019t count on it, because those claims have not been scientifically tested and verified.  Even so, the acai berry is a highly-nutritious food full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, monounsaturated fats, vitamins A, E and thiamin, and lots of trace minerals. Ac\u0105i is used as an ingredient in juices, energy bars, ice cream, and supplements. The berries, which are dark purple and about the size of a grape with less pulp, are produced by a palm tree that grows in the floodplains of the Amazon River and, as a result, they are rare and expensive.
