Throughout December she shared her insights on surviving the holiday and impending new year in a healthy and enjoyable manner. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s that time of year when many people make New Year\u2019s resolutions to lose weight, eat more nutritiously or become more active.\u00a0 Unfortunately for many of us, by the time Valentine\u2019s Day rolls around, these goals are but a distant memory.<\/p>\n<p>Often this occurs because we set goals that are too ambitious or too vague, or because we fall victim to the \u201call-or-nothing\u201d mentality that suggests we\u2019ve \u201cfailed\u201d if we lapse just once.<\/p>\n<p>This year, make kinder, gentler and more realistic goals.\u00a0 Create an action plan of healthy habits you\u2019d like to learn, with reasonable milestones for achieving them.\u00a0 And treat the process itself as a journey where you discover more about yourself along the way. <!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>Treat slip-ups as hiccups<\/strong>.\u00a0 A lapse is a temporary interruption in your plan\u2014a time when you got off track in achieving your goals.\u00a0 Maybe you ate more than you planned when socializing with your friends, or didn\u2019t walk for a few days when the weather was bad.\u00a0 Instead of getting derailed by feelings of guilt, treat the lapse as a learning opportunity.\u00a0 Retrace your steps, evaluate what happened and plan a new strategy to manage the same situation differently the next time.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3957\" title=\"walking-partners\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/walking-partners.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Get by with a little help from your friends.<\/strong> Recruit a walking buddy, invite a friend to a cooking class, or encourage your work colleague to bring a sack lunch instead of going out.\u00a0 By having a \u201cpartner in lifestyle change,\u201d you\u2019ll be more accountable \u2013 and therefore more likely to reach your goals. Plus, you\u2019ll reap the social and emotional benefits of spending time with people you care about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personalize the benefits. <\/strong> Improved energy, better health and a slimmer appearance are general benefits of many health-related behavior changes.\u00a0 Instead of thinking in general terms, make the benefits personal to you.\u00a0 For example, I will follow through with my activity goals in order to have more energy to play with my children, run a 5k race in the spring, and have greater confidence to wear a swimsuit at the beach.
