Since losing 40 pounds following the birth of my daughter three years ago, I\u2019ve been haunted by those elusive last few pounds.  With the Chicago Marathon on tap for early fall, I didn\u2019t want my weight struggles to interfere with the rigorous training.  An increase in mileage brings a need to ensure you take in enough calories, not cut back.<\/p>\n<p>Married to a <strong><a title=\"personal trainer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/how-to-become-a-personal-trainer\/\">personal trainer<\/a><\/strong> and a long-time subscriber to multiple fitness magazines, I\u2019ve heard it all before\u2014to bust through plateaus, get outside your comfort zone.  Most recommend adding new strength moves and <strong><a title=\"high intensity interval training\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/12\/use-high-intensity-interval-training-to-blast-fat-fast\/\">cardio intervals<\/a><\/strong> to your routine.  While this is smart advice, those ingredients were already part of my fitness recipe, yet the scale remained steady.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Frustrated and in need of a plan, I met with my company-sponsored wellness expert.  At her recommendation I set out on <strong><a title=\"The 4 Day Diet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/the-4-day-diet\/\">The 4 Day Diet<\/a><\/strong>. A bit misleading by title, it\u2019s actually a 28-day program comprised of seven four-day modules. The title may be gimmicky, but the nutrition behind it is sound.  The food lists are comprised of mostly natural, whole foods\u2014brown rice, beans, spinach, fruits, veggies, etc.  While most items were already a part of my menu, the program enlightened me to the numerous extras I had sneaked in over the course of a day.  The shake-up I needed wasn\u2019t in the gym or on the track, it was in the kitchen.  If this sounds all-to-familiar, consider the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pick a plan that suits your personality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This worked for me because I\u2019m motivated by structured goals.  Without a race on the horizon, my running becomes unfocused.  The book gave me a blueprint\u2014not unlike a training schedule\u2014laying out the formula for success.  All I had to do was follow it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Using Nutrition to Bust Through Weight Loss Plateaus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/using-nutrition-to-bust-through-weight-loss-plateaus\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-45773 alignright\" title=\"4 day diet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/4-day-diet-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/4-day-diet-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/4-day-diet.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>Make necessary adjustments.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My first concern was ensuring I was taking in enough calories to meet my activity level.  While the book provides menus so calorie counting isn\u2019t necessary, I totaled mine to ensure the numbers meshed with my workouts.  If the numbers didn\u2019t add up, I added in an extra serving of food from the list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spread the word.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to notify your old prom date via Faceook status update, but it doesn\u2019t hurt to discuss your goals with family, friends, and co-workers.  Not only can this keep you accountable, you might inspire positive changes in them as well.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly I\u2019ve discovered that diet books aren\u2019t only for those with 25+ pounds to lose.  Most of us could benefit from a nutritional tune-up every now and then and just might uncover unexpected results.
