{"id":46799,"date":"2011-04-22T11:11:55","date_gmt":"2011-04-22T16:11:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/?p=46799"},"modified":"2011-04-23T13:34:12","modified_gmt":"2011-04-23T18:34:12","slug":"healthy-easter-basket-stuffers-for-all-ages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/healthy-easter-basket-stuffers-for-all-ages\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthy Easter Basket Stuffers for All Ages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a title=\"Healthy Easter Basket Stuffers for All Ages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/healthy-easter-basket-stuffers-for-all-ages\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-47262\" title=\"easter basket\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/easter-basket.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>By Jessie Gorges and Kelsey Murray<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Forget the Peeps and chocolate bunnies; get your children, significant other and family members something healthy this year for Easter.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Kavey on <a title=\"Sugar Health Effects on WebMD.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/food-recipes\/features\/health-effects-of-sugar\" target=\"_blank\">WebMD.com<\/a>, too much sugar can be a problem for children because it can lead children into lifelong obesity. &#8220;The reason that we think of it as a problem is because of the big rise in obesity in childhood, and that rise has occurred over the same time period that there&#8217;s been a major increase in the amount of simple sugar that children consume.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Check out these healthy Easter basket treats with little to no sugar that everyone is sure to love.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dried\/fresh fruit:<\/strong> A great alternative to jelly beans, fruit will help conquer those sweet-tooth cravings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennis shoe insoles: <a title=\"runners\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/a-runner-shares-her-story\/\">Runners<\/a><\/strong> and walkers will appreciate these. They add a few months of life to those tennis shoes that have about had it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sun block:<\/strong> Health nut or not, everyone should take <strong><a title=\"skin health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/sun-safety-is-key-to-meeting-vitamin-d-recommendations\/\">skin health<\/a><\/strong> seriously. The stronger the SPF, the better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vitamins: <\/strong>Whether it&#8217;s an A to Z multivitamin or fish-oil supplement, giving someone these is a way to show that you care about their health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trail mix:<\/strong> Check the grams of sugar on the package. Some trail mixes are loaded with chocolate candy and are no better than a package of Snickers. Make sure you&#8217;re getting something that is truly healthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy bars:<\/strong> They don&#8217;t usually taste as good as a candy bar, but they\u2019re loaded with those much-needed nutrients, making them the perfect snack before the gym or as\u00a0a meal replacement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Low-carb or sugar-free candy:<\/strong> Usually enjoyed by diabetics and <strong><a title=\"Atkins Diet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/Atkins_Diet\/\">Atkins<\/a><\/strong> dieters, these specialty candies will help cut down on both sugar and calories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fitness DVDs: <a title=\"Pilates\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/a-beginners-guide-to-pilates\/\">Pilates<\/a><\/strong>, yoga or aerobics- it really doesn&#8217;t matter as long as you get your loved ones off the couch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pretzels:<\/strong> Better for you than chips, pretzels can cure those <strong><a title=\"salty craving\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/02\/satisfy-a-salty-craving-on-a-diet\/\">salty cravings<\/a><\/strong>. Goldfish crackers or Special K chips also make for a healthy snack.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herbal teas:<\/strong> Find something that&#8217;s loaded with antioxidants. Look for teas containing blueberries and pomegranates.<\/p>\n<p>So how much sugar should you be eating? For men, about 9 teaspoons of  sugar a day is the ideal maximum; for women, it&#8217;s \u00a0a little lower at  only 6 teaspoons a day. Obviously, the majority of the unhealthy Easter  candies will put you over your daily sugar level.
