Learn more about the nutritional and health benefits from this tiny blue food, and find several healthy blueberry recipes.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Blueberries\u2019 Antioxidant Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first thing to point out is that, although <strong><a title=\"blueberry nutrition benefits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/blueberries-offer-nutrition-and-flavor-all-year-long\/\">blueberries are loaded with taste and antioxidants<\/a><\/strong>, they are also low in calories and high in fiber. This makes them the perfect food for dieters and anyone looking for a nutritious snack. One cup of blueberries provides you with the equivalent antioxidant content of five servings of carrots, broccoli, squash, and apples. What this means for your health is a lower risk of heart disease, vibrant, firm skin, and a boost in brain power.<\/p>\n<p>The primary force behind blueberries\u2019 super power is the phytonutrient<em> anthocyanin<\/em>, a particular type of flavonoid\u2014the one that gives <strong><a title=\"benefits of blue foods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/eat-right-with-color-blue-and-purple-fruits-and-veggies\/\">blueberries that deep blue pigment<\/a><\/strong>. These antioxidant benefits of<em> anthocyanin<\/em> are thought to protect your body against the damaging effects of free radicals and the chronic diseases associated with the aging process. Based on data from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, blueberries are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity. Using a test called <strong><a title=\"orac values\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/the-o2-diet\/\">ORAC<\/a><\/strong> (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), researchers have shown that a serving of fresh blueberries provides more antioxidant activity than many other fresh fruits and vegetables.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. In just half a cup of blueberries you get 2 grams of fiber, equal to a slice of whole grain bread. Nutrient content of blueberries is a dieter\u2019s dream come true. According to Health Magazine, blueberries are a particularly rich source of <em>anthocyanins<\/em> (also contained in apples, grapes, blackberries, radishes, and red cabbage).<\/p>\n<p>Several studies suggest <em>anthocyanins<\/em> help prevent heart attack by discouraging blood clots from forming. They also appear to improve night vision and to slow macular degeneration by strengthening tiny blood vessels in the back of the eye. Based on the guidelines for getting your <a title=\"how to eat more fruit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/12\/sneaky-ways-to-eat-more-fruits-and-vegetables\/\">f<strong>ive or more servings a day of fruits and vegetables<\/strong><\/a>, one serving of fresh blueberries would be \u00bd a cup, one serving of 100 percent blueberry juice is \u00be cup, and one serving of dried blueberries is \u00bc cup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Healing Properties of Blueberries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What you get from eating blueberries are the many health-promoting benefits, which can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strengthening blood vessels<\/li>\n<li>Clearing arteries<\/li>\n<li>Improved vision<\/li>\n<li>More antioxidants for disease protection<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced memory<\/li>\n<li>Help for urinary tract infections<\/li>\n<li>Reversal of age-related physical and mental deterioration<\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"blueberries for weight loss\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/secret-weight-loss-power-of-blueberries\/\">Promotes weight control<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a <em>Newsweek<\/em> article from June 17, 2002, neuroscientist James Joseph, of Tufts University, made it clear that when it comes to brain protection, there\u2019s nothing quite like blueberries, which he calls the \u201c<strong><a title=\"blueberries for brain health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/top-10-foods-for-better-brain-health\/\">brain berry<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d Dr. Joseph attributes the blueberry\u2019s health benefits to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, and sees its potential for reversing short-term memory loss and forestalling many other effects of aging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Modern Blueberry Production<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, the most common variety of blueberry sold in the supermarkets are the \u201chighbush\u201d or \u201ccultivated\u201d blueberries, which grow on tree-sized shrubs that can get as high as fifteen feet tall. The \u201clowbush,\u201d or wild blueberries, grow on small, ankle-high shrubs (only about one foot tall) and are about one-third the size of the cultivated blueberries. The wild blueberries are preferred by people who like the tangy, complex flavor of sweet and sour. The wild blueberries are from a different species than cultivated blueberries, but are part of the same plant family. Known as the \u201cCaviar of Maine,\u201d wild blueberries grow all over the state and some think they are tastier than the domesticated variety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Cooking with Blueberries<a title=\"healthy blueberry pancakes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/recipes\/better-blueberry-pancakes\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-51944\" title=\"blueberry pancakes\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/blueberry-pancakes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blueberries can be used in recipes or just eaten plain. They are wonderful in baked goods, jams, pies, pancakes, salads, or, best of all, with a simple dollop of plain sheep\u2019s yogurt. Fresh or frozen berries can be used in baked goods, but frozen berries will discolor the batter. To prevent this blue \u201cbleeding,\u201d roll the blueberries lightly in flour before adding them to the batter.
