This week, Self magazine launched Diet Tapper, a plan that texts you meal inspirations and other tips five times per day. The service costs $2.99 per month and also includes online access to an &#8220;exclusive new diet plan,&#8221; that apparently includes a library of meal and workout suggestions. Subscribers will also recipe a &#8220;Recipe of the Week&#8221; newsletter via email.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Self Diet Tapper\" href=\"http:\/\/www.self.com\/diettapper\">Self&#8217;s Diet Tapper page<\/a> <\/strong>provides sample texts such as: &#8220;A protein-packed lunch for 450 cal. Protein eaters burn more fat. Think poultry, fish, legumes or lowfat dairy&#8221; and &#8220;Set your sights on 45 min of <strong><a title=\"Beginner's Guide to Cardio\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/a-beginners-guide-to-cardio\/\">cardio<\/a><\/strong>. Get inspired with our favorite workouts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Diet Tapper doesn&#8217;t dictate a restrictive diet. \u201cWhat\u2019s most appealing is that users will be in control so they can choose whether to act on the gentle tap,\u201d Self editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger told <strong><a title=\"Self Magazine Launches Diet Plan that Sends You Five Texts A Day\" href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2011\/08\/15\/self-diet-tapper\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mashable<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to think about any formal diet plan or second-guess themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diet Tapper was inspired by new research that suggests that text message reminders can help people reach their health goals. A British study published in <strong><a title=\"Text Messages Help Smokers Quit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736%2811%2960701-0\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Lancet<\/em><\/a><\/strong> found that participants who received daily messages were more likely to quit smoking than a control group. Another study, published in the <strong><a title=\"Text Message Reminders Improve Sun Screen Use\" href=\"http:\/\/archderm.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/145\/11\/1230?maxtoshow=&amp;hits=10&amp;RESULTFORMAT=&amp;fulltext=sunscreen&amp;searchid=1&amp;FIRSTINDEX=0&amp;resourcetype=HWCIT\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Archives of Dermatology<\/em><\/a><\/strong> showed that text messages made people more likely to wear sunscreen.<\/p>\n<p>But will this theory apply to weight loss? Self certainly has a large body of advice to select messages from, but on the other hand, I worry that receiving so many messages daily might become annoying or easy to tune out.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
