{"id":61709,"date":"2012-01-03T03:07:13","date_gmt":"2012-01-03T08:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/?p=61709"},"modified":"2012-01-03T03:12:23","modified_gmt":"2012-01-03T08:12:23","slug":"lead-a-sedentary-lifestyle-for-only-23-5-hours-each-day-says-dr-mike-evans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/lead-a-sedentary-lifestyle-for-only-23-5-hours-each-day-says-dr-mike-evans\/","title":{"rendered":"Lead a Sedentary Lifestyle for Only 23.5 Hours Each Day, Says Dr. Mike Evans [VIDEO]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some experts suggest that maintaining a healthy weight, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, or drinking plenty of water could all rank as the single best thing a person can do for their health. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hdlab.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dr. Mike Evans<\/a><\/strong>, founder of the Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto and a staff physician at St. Michael&#8217;s Hospital, would disagree.<a title=\"couch potato\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/lead-a-sedentary-lifestyle-for-only-23-5-hours-each-day-says-dr-mike-evans\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-61780\" title=\"sitting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sitting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Evans, the single best thing we can do to improve or maintain our health is to fit <strong><a title=\"time to exercise\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/find-time-to-exercise\/\">30 minutes of exercise<\/a><\/strong> into each day. While this may not seem like a lot to some, the average adult in the United States spends five hours per day watching television or screens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being sedentary is bad for your health,&#8221; said Evans in the following video, featuring some very intriguing white board art. &#8220;TV is a chronic disease. [Researcher] Lennert Veerman found that people who spend six hours per day watching TV can expect to live five years less than active people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aUaInS6HIGo\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"274\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To improve your health, Evans suggests limiting sedentary activities, like sitting and sleeping, to 23.5 hours per day. Evans believes that exercise is the most important form of preventative medicine.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Preventative medicine includes maintaining a healthy weight, drinking less, smoking less and maintaining a healthy blood pressure and cholesterol level,&#8221; said Evans. &#8220;Exercise is another form of preventative medicine that makes the biggest difference to you health and offers the highest level of return.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Exercise, which can be as simple as <strong><a title=\"walking for weight loss\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/walking-can-be-the-first-step-toward-weight-loss\/\">walking for 10 minutes<\/a><\/strong>, three times per day, helps prevent and alleviate the symptoms of a number of medical conditions.<a title=\"dr mike evans\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/lead-a-sedentary-lifestyle-for-only-23-5-hours-each-day-says-dr-mike-evans\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-61779\" title=\"dr mike evans art\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/dr-mike-evans-art.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Exercise can] reduce the rates of pain and disability for arthritis patients, reduce the progression of dementia and Alzheimer&#8217;s,&#8221; said Evans. &#8220;<strong><a title=\"reversing diabetes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/diabetes-is-not-a-life-sentence\/\">Exercise can also reduce the progressions of diabetes<\/a><\/strong> by 58%, reduce the risk of hip fracture in post-menopausal women by 41%, reduce anxiety by 48% and depression by at least 30%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, exercise is the most effective treatment for fatigue and, in a study of 10,000 Harvard alumni, is responsible for a 23% lower risk of death.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to [a study led by] Steven Blair, Professor at Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina, low fitness is the strongest predictor of death, above obesity, smoking-related disease and high blood pressure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Blair&#8217;s study also reported that if a person is obese but active, then they are more likely to be in better health even if they don&#8217;t <strong><a title=\"weight watchers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/Weight_Watchers\/\">lose weight<\/a><\/strong>. &#8220;There are many negative consequences to obesity when a person doesn&#8217;t exercise,&#8221; Evans said. &#8220;Weight loss ameliorates a lot of those negative consequences of obesity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To try to <strong><a title=\"time to exercise\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/find-time-to-exercise\/commute-with-a-workout\/\">work more exercise into your busy schedule<\/a><\/strong>, Evans recommends scheduling activity in advance with friends, building extra<\/p>\n<p>ing into your commute, or spending more time walking your dog.<\/p>\n<p><em>Image via the video, &#8220;23 and 1\/2 hours&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some experts suggest that maintaining a healthy weight, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, or drinking plenty of water could all rank as the single best thing a person can do for their health.
