\"\"<\/a>Dr. Pierre Dukan, the French founder of the controversial Dukan Diet<\/a><\/strong>, is facing an ethics hearing for\u00a0his suggestion\u00a0that French high school students\u00a0should be rewarded on exams for not being overweight.<\/p>\n

Dukan, who’s wildly successful high-protein<\/a><\/strong>, low-carb diet<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has a celebrity following that includes Kate Middleton<\/a><\/strong>, made a public recommendation that\u00a0France\u2019s baccalaureate exam include an “anti-obesity”\u00a0section that students\u00a0can pass by staying within\u00a0their recommended weight range. The exam is\u00a0required for 17 year olds to finish high school and\u00a0enter college.<\/p>\n

Health professionals immediately responded to the comment, outraged, and the French College of Physicians says Dukan violated the country\u2019s medical ethics code that states\u00a0\u201ca doctor must be aware of the repercussions his views can have on the public.\u201d The College claims Dukan\u2019s statements were reckless and\u00a0could do damage to overweight teens and those struggling with eating disorders.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything about this is wrong,\u201d Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, told ABC News. \u201cIt\u2019s wrong because it invites eating disorders. It\u2019s wrong because weight has nothing to do with academic performance\u2026 and the notion that weight is a behavior that should incentivized is just wrong. Weight is an outcome. We should incentivize things people can control.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The College of Physicans lodged a second complaint that\u00a0accuses Dukan of breaching a seperate part of the ethics code, which states that medicine cannot be practiced like a business. The College claims Dukan is prioritizing\u00a0making money\u00a0over medicine. His Dukan Diet has sold more than seven million copies\u00a0and\u00a0his\u00a0website provides paid weight loss programs.<\/p>\n

Dr. Dukan is no stranger to criticism.\u00a0Last year, Dukan lost a libel case against nutritionist Dr. Jean-Michel Cohen who\u00a0panned the Dukan Diet as ascam and dangerous, saying that the only people who benefited were those that made money- not dieters.<\/p>\n

The ethics hearing will occur within the next six months, and if found guilty, Dr. Dukan could be removed from the French medical registry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
