The Mayo Clinic is a very credible and highly renowned hospital that has a great reputation as a pioneer and innovator in medicine &#8211; patient care, medical research and academic education. The article discussed a <a title=\"mayo clinic research\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.com\/health\/diabetes-complications\/MY00211\" target=\"_blank\">research study<\/a> in which scientists examined the phytochemical sulforaphane, found in broccoli.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/recipes\/broccoli-salad\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6966\" title=\"broccoli\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/broccoli.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that sulforaphane seems to help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Produce enzymes in the body that protect blood vessels, which is achieved by reducing tissue damaging substances triggered by high <a title=\"glycemic index\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/Glycemic_Index\/\" target=\"_self\">blood sugar<\/a>. Vascular disease is a major complication of diabetes. This type of disease can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and circulation issues in extremities, which could lead to possible amputation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Activate genes that regulate protective <a title=\"antioxidants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/these-foods-pack-a-mighty-punch-of-antioxidants\/\" target=\"_self\">antioxidant<\/a> (scavenger harmful free radicals) and detoxifying enzymes.<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Eliminated defects in DNA (therefore, it&#8217;s not repeated\/copied in gene formation meaning a reduction in cancer occurrence).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduced prostate cancer in men<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And the one of the <em>most<\/em> significant findings was that broccoli may help with the reversal of high blood sugar damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To sum it up\u2026 broccoli is a super food!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you find this information as interesting as I do and want to incorporate broccoli into your diet, but aren\u2019t a huge fan of it, here are some alternatives. It\u2019s good to know that broccoli is a member of the <strong>Brassica<\/strong> group of vegetables in the mustard family. Others in this family include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Root vegetables \u2014 rutabaga, turnips, kohlrabi<\/li>\n<li>Leafy vegetables \u2014 cabbage, Brussels sprouts, <a title=\"kale\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/have-your-kale-and-eat-it-too\/\" target=\"_self\">kale<\/a>, rapini, collard greens, bok choy, napa (Chinese cabbage), mustard greens<\/li>\n<li>Flowers \u2014 cauliflower, broccoli, broccoflower<\/li>\n<li>Seeds \u2014 mustard seed and rapeseed (from which canola oil is derived)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"center;\"><em><strong>Remember its recommended to eat 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies every day!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A very interesting article was written on the Mayo Clinic website about broccoli\u2019s ability to reverse diabetes damage.
