Heart disease is one such disease, and here I explain what it is, why it affects the overweight, symptoms and prevention.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/understanding-obesity-related-diseases-heart-disease\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7478\" title=\"cardiologist\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/cardiologist.gif\" alt=\"cardiologist\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><br \/>\nHeart disease is an umbrella term used to describe a range of diseases affecting the heart and, in some cases, blood vessels.\u00a0 The diseases that fall under this broad term include: cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems, congenital heart defects, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The damaging effect of <a title=\"heart disease\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/tag\/heart-disease\/\" target=\"_self\">heart disease<\/a> is severe, it\u2019s the number one killer of men and women.\u00a0 According to the Mayo Clinic website, it\u2019s responsible for 40% of all the deaths in the U.S., which is more than all forms of cancer combined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is it affected by obesity\/overweight?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Abdominal fat is a predictor of risk for obesity-related diseases.\u00a0 Overeating and physical inactivity is a deadly combination when it comes to your health.\u00a0 A poor diet high in fat, salt, and cholesterol (which is a common diet in obese\/overweight individuals) can and does contribute to the development of heart disease.\u00a0 The rate of obesity is significantly high in the U.S., thus is of concern to health professionals because of its implications on American&#8217;s health.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the symptoms?<\/strong><br \/>\nHeart disease symptoms vary, depending on what type of heart disease you have. Some common ones include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chest pain*<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath*<\/li>\n<li>Pain, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms<\/li>\n<li>Lightheaded<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Fainting*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>*See your doctor immediately if the symptoms occur.<br \/>\nRemember heart disease is easier to treat when it\u2019s detected early! See your doctor as soon as you experience anything\u00a0 out of the ordinary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/how-to-lose-50-pounds\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6317 alignright\" title=\"overweight-couple-on-treadmill\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/overweight-couple-on-treadmill.jpg\" alt=\"overweight-couple-on-treadmill\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>What can you do to prevent it?<\/strong><br \/>\nMany forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices, diet, and exercise.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"smoking\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/smoking-and-obesity-are-equally-fatal\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Smoking<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Heart attacks are more common in smokers than nonsmokers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Diet &#8211;<\/strong> A diet high in fat, salt, and cholesterol can contribute to the development of heart disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Obesity<\/strong> &#8211; Excess weight worsens other risk factors.\u00a0 Reach and maintain a <a title=\"healthy weight\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/understanding-body-mass-index\/\" target=\"_self\">healthy body weight<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Physical Inactivity<\/strong> &#8211; Lack of exercise puts you at risk for multiple cancers and disease.
