{"id":7741,"date":"2009-05-02T01:00:38","date_gmt":"2009-05-02T06:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/?p=7741"},"modified":"2009-05-01T10:45:27","modified_gmt":"2009-05-01T15:45:27","slug":"how-meditation-can-help-conquer-stress-and-extra-pounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/05\/how-meditation-can-help-conquer-stress-and-extra-pounds\/","title":{"rendered":"How Meditation Can Help Conquer Stress and Extra Pounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/topics\/yoga\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7742\" title=\"ommommy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/ommommy.jpg\" alt=\"ommommy\" width=\"193\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a>Today&#8217;s guest blogger is Tracy Connery from <a title=\"yoga\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mommyom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MommyOm<\/a>, a wife, mother, writer and photographer.\u00a0 Her days are taken in any number of directions, but a long-term relationship with her yoga mat has kept complete craziness at bay.\u00a0 MommyOm is the best in all things <a title=\"yoga for moms\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mommyom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">yoga<\/a> and meditation for parents from one mom\u2019s expanding perspective.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The next time your day has spiraled out of control\u2026 demands of screaming children, looming deadlines, stacks of unpaid bills\u2026 rather than looking to the self-help section of the bookstore, or heading to the doctor for some kind of medicinal intervention, or worse, to the fridge for yet another peppermint patty\u2026 sweet, tingly, chocolate-y goodness \u2026 ahem\u2026 OK, perhaps that\u2019s just me\u2026.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m relatively new to meditation, but the research I\u2019ve found is compelling, and so far only confirmed by my own experience.\u00a0 The consensus is, from study to study, article to article, that when you\u2019re left reeling with the pressures of life, particularly in the wake of today\u2019s economic concerns, what is often lacking is a firm sense of living and being in the present.\u00a0 It is here, disconnected from the power of the present moment, that we are most likely to allow the demands of work to overwhelm us, fly off the handle with our loved ones, or retreat to the fridge in search of comfort, if not all of the above.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the beauty and power of mediation lies.\u00a0 With a little practice, one can enjoy the benefits of a greater awareness, so that regardless the situation, we have a better ability to engage, rooted in presence and mindfulness, more fully and effectively able to draw upon the perspective and power that brings.\u00a0 As we learn to sit in mindfulness, where the past and future dissolve away, we gain a better handle on those thoughts contaminated by what we feel should be, or more likely, what isn&#8217;t, and instead redirect them to feelings of the abundance that is.\u00a0 This state of practiced mindfulness inevitably transcends the concentrated moments of silence into the rest of our day and the other areas of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its effectiveness in <a title=\"stress management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/manage-stress-with-simple-relaxation-techniques\/\" target=\"_self\">managing stress<\/a>, meditation has proven to offer any number of health benefits, from decreased <a title=\"obesity related diseases\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/understanding-obesity-related-diseases-hypertension-and-high-blood-pressure\/\" target=\"_self\">blood pressure<\/a> and managing chronic pain and depression to elevated mood and increased tranquility.\u00a0 Additionally, you may also enjoy better sex (yes, husband, that\u2019s what I said!) and it\u2019s highly likely, for those of you looking to get a handle on over-eating, an increased feeling of mindfulness and gratitude, not to mention an enhanced body image, leaves less room for indulging in thoughtless binging , wandering aimlessly to the refrigerator in search of comfort, something to quell your boredom, or that pesky, albeit wonderful, mid-afternoon fix of chocolate and mint!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><em><strong>Guest Blog Series:<\/strong> Look for the following badge on your favorite health sites to see if they have been a featured guest blogger on <\/em><a title=\"diet reviews\" onclick=\"pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outbound\/article\/');\" href=\"..\/..\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>DietsInReview.com<\/em><\/a><em>.
