Cereal, oatmeal, waffles, eggs, latte\u2014what\u2019s not to like? And if you opt for healthy versions of these foods, breakfast could be your most nutritious meal of the day. Here\u2019s how to make the most of your morning meal.<a title=\"vegetable frittatta\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/4-breakfasts-worth-waking-up-for-including-a-vegetable-frittatta-recipe\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-77945\" title=\"fritatta\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/fritatta.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/fritatta.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/fritatta-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cereal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check the ingredient list to make sure that all the grains in the cereal are whole. Then check the label to make sure that you\u2019re getting no more than 5 grams of sugar and at least 4 grams of fiber per 100 calories. If your cereal is very low sugar, such as Food for Life\u2019s Ezekiel cereals or Uncle Sam\u2019s, it\u2019s fine to sprinkle on a few tablespoons of granola (which might exceed the \u201c5 g sugar per 100 calories\u201d rule in larger amounts). Here\u2019s what to put in your bowl:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>180 to 200 calories of a cereal of your choice, or a mix of cereals<\/li>\n<li>1 cup fat-free or one percent milk or soymilk<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 to 1 cup fruit<\/li>\n<li>1 to 2 tablespoons unsalted nuts or seeds (like pumpkin seeds)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(For an example\u2014and to see what a cereal fanatic I truly am\u2014check out my <strong><a title=\"cereal\" href=\"http:\/\/members.thebestlife.com\/blog\/how-healthy-is-your-cereal-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent blog<\/a><\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vegetable Frittata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll love the ease of a frittata: It\u2019s basically beaten eggs poured over saut\u00e9ed vegetables, heated halfway on the stove top, then finished off in the oven. The sky\u2019s the limit when it comes to ingredients\u2014leeks, tomatoes, mushrooms, asparagus, spinach, cheese, pine nuts\u2014you name it!<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how I made one recently (for a photo, <strong><a title=\"fritatta\" href=\"http:\/\/members.thebestlife.com\/blog\/the-breakfast-experiment\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a><\/strong>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spray a medium oven-proof pan with vegetable oil cooking spray.<\/li>\n<li>Saut\u00e9 2\/3 cup chopped cauliflower (and an optional 1\/4 cup sliced mushrooms, if desired) in 2 teaspoons olive oil for a few minutes until vegetables start to soften.<\/li>\n<li>Pour in 2 beaten eggs or 1\/2 cup liquid eggs (such as Better\u2019n Eggs) and 1 chopped scallion.<\/li>\n<li>Cook, using fork to push outer edges of egg slightly into the center, allowing runnier egg to collect at the edge and cook.<\/li>\n<li>After about 4 minutes, sprinkle with 1 tablespoon Parmesan and transfer to a pre-heated 400 degree oven. Cook in oven for about 2 minutes, until eggs reach desired degree of doneness.<\/li>\n<li>Serve with a slice of whole-grain bread, a piece of fruit and a glass of milk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Yogurt, Fruit and Nuts\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><br \/>\nThis is a cinch to put together, and is easily transported to work. The basics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup nonfat or low-fat plain yogurt<\/li>\n<li>1 cup fruit of your choice<\/li>\n<li>3 to 4 tablespoons unsalted nuts or seeds<\/li>\n<li>35 to 50 calories of a high-fiber cereal, such as 1\/4 cup <strong><a title=\"best cereal kashi\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/2012-food-awards\/best-cereal-kashi-original\/\">Kashi Go Lean<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon honey (if desired)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Oatmeal to Go<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No time to make breakfast? If you\u2019re near a Starbucks, McDonald\u2019s or any other place that serves oatmeal, you\u2019re covered.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a title=\"healthy mcdonalds food\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/02\/mcdonalds-healthiest-menu-choices\/\">At McDonald\u2019s<\/a><\/strong>, skip the cream and brown sugar, but keep the diced apples and cranberry raisin blend for a total of 270 calories. (Even better, skip the cranberries and bring a tablespoon or 2 of your own nuts to add.) Add a medium nonfat McLatte, bringing your meal to 370 calories.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"starbucks healthy food\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/healthiest-menu-choices-at-starbucks\/\">At Starbucks<\/a><\/strong>, skip the brown sugar and top with the nut medley and dried fruit for a total of 340 calories.
