It\u2019s no wonder that people who are looking to slim down often try to tackle just one area\u2014either their diet or exercise routine (or lack thereof).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-85959\" title=\"workout class\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/workout-class.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/workout-class.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/workout-class-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019ve always said that you need to incorporate both elements into your life to drop pounds (and study after study confirms this fact), there is something to be said for initially focusing on just one component. No surprise here: <strong><a title=\"how to become a personal trainer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/how-to-become-a-personal-trainer\/\">As a fitness trainer<\/a><\/strong>, I\u2019d recommend that you start off by increasing your activity before you even think about what you are or aren\u2019t putting in your mouth.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just a personal bias toward fitness that makes me say this. Logic and sound science both suggest you should begin a fitness routine before you start cleaning up your diet.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Burning calories is easier than cutting them<\/strong>. To lose weight, you have to <strong><a title=\"what is a calorie deficit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/what-is-a-calorie-deficit\/\">create a calorie deficit<\/a><\/strong>. You can do so either by cutting calories from your diet or expending them through exercise. If you\u2019re like most people, you\u2019ll find trimming calories from your diet to be challenging. Research suggests that cutting more than 250 or so calories each day can trigger the body\u2019s hunger response (this dates <strong><a title=\"caveman diet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/paleo-diet\">back to our caveman days<\/a><\/strong> when a shortage of calories often signaled starvation). On the other hand, when you\u2019re active, you can create a negative energy balance without having to change your diet all that much. In fact, the more you move, the fewer calories you\u2019ll have to cut. (Bonus: Getting all the nutrients you need is easier the more calories you\u2019re able to get away with, so you\u2019ll be healthier to boot.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll get a mood boost<\/strong>. <strong><a title=\"science of runner's high\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/scientists-take-a-closer-look-at-the-history-of-the-runners-high\/\">Runner\u2019s high<\/a><\/strong>, exercise euphoria, an adrenaline boost\u2026whatever you call it, that mood lift you get from exercise is undeniable. These good feelings will help make the weight loss process easier because you\u2019ll be less likely to turn to food for emotional reasons and you\u2019ll be more motivated to stay on track. You\u2019ll also be better prepared for cutting calories if\/when you have to do so down the line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll feel more energetic<\/strong>. Exercise can increase energy levels, and the more energy you have, the more active you\u2019ll be.
