Now researchers are taking it a grim step further by estimating how many deaths can be directly attributed to sugary drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Harvard have linked sugary drinks to the deaths of 25,000 Americans every year and 180,000 deaths worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to obesity, and that a large number of deaths are caused by <strong><a title=\"obesity related diseases\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/obesity-related-diseases\/\">obesity-related diseases<\/a><\/strong>. But until now, nobody had really put these pieces together,\u201d said Gitanjali Singh, the lead author of the five-year study and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"coke and chips\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/sugar-and-salt-the-battle-to-see-which-kills-more-of-us\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-86813 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/soda-and-chips.jpg\" alt=\"soda and chips\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/soda-and-chips.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/soda-and-chips-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a not-so-shocking development, The American Beverage Association issued a critical response to the study\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does not show that consuming sugar-sweetened beverages causes chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer \u2013 the real causes of death among the studied subjects,\u201d the industry group said in a written statement. \u201cThe researchers make a huge leap when they take beverage intake calculations from around the globe and allege that those beverages are the cause of deaths which the authors themselves acknowledge are due to chronic disease.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Not to be outdone, salt is staking its claim to specific death numbers&#8230; and it\u2019s much worse than those attributed to sugary drinks.<\/p>\n<p>The same Harvard researchers linked heavy salt consumption to one in 10 deaths in the U.S. and more than two million cardiovascular deaths worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers used data from 247 surveys on sodium consumption and 107 clinical trials that examined how salt affects blood pressure, and blood pressure\u2019s contribution to cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;The burden of sodium is much higher than the burden of sugar-sweetened beverages,\u201d said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health. \u201cThat\u2019s because sugar-sweetened beverages are just one type of food that people can avoid, whereas sodium is in everything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Salt Institute (you read that right, a salt advocacy group) took issue with the findings. Is anyone surprised?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis misleading study did not measure any actual cardiovascular deaths related to salt intake, since, by the authors\u2019 own admission, no country anywhere in the world consumes the low levels of salt they recommend,\u201d said Morton Satin, vice president of science and research for the Virginia-based institute.<\/p>\n<p>These latest studies came just a week after a judge\u00a0shot down\u00a0<strong><a title=\"new york soda ban\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/05\/mahttps:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/nyc-soda-ban-deemed-illegal-by-state-judge\/e-right-fight\/\">New York City\u2019s ban on sugary drinks<\/a><\/strong> that are 16 ounces or larger.
