{"id":87310,"date":"2013-04-08T08:00:36","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T13:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/?p=87310"},"modified":"2013-04-05T17:12:36","modified_gmt":"2013-04-05T22:12:36","slug":"invokana-drug-may-be-game-changer-for-type-2-diabetes-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/invokana-drug-may-be-game-changer-for-type-2-diabetes-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Invokana Drug May be Game Changer for Type 2 Diabetes Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/invokana-drug-may-be-game-changer-for-type-2-diabetes-patients\/invokana-drug\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-87313\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87313\" title=\"invokana-drug\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/invokana-drug.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/invokana-drug.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/invokana-drug-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first of a new class of drugs to treat<strong> <a title=\"type 2 diabetes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/type-2-diabetes\">Type 2 Diabetes<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0called Invokana.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Invokana filters sugar into the kidney as opposed to previous medications which manipulated insulin levels to <strong><a title=\"manage blood sugar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/top-reasons-to-eat-fiber\/\">control blood sugar<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Our resident pharmacist <strong><a title=\"sarah kahn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/authors\/sarah\/\">Dr. Sarah Kahn<\/a><\/strong> says\u00a0there are some concerns regarding how Invokana will affect the heart. According to Kahn, the current data is inconclusive, so they are conducting a trial called the CANVAS study (Canagliflozin Cardiovascular Assessment Study). Those results won&#8217;t be available until 2026. In addition, the FDA is requiring Janssen Pharmaceuticals &#8211; Invokana&#8217;s manufacturer\u00a0&#8211; to conduct five studies once the drug hits the market.<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>As for whether or not it&#8217;s a game changer, Kahn says possibly yes. &#8220;It has the potential for patients to lose weight and not cause low blood sugar. It&#8217;s the first of its kind although there are at least two other drugs currently in development,&#8221; she said. &#8220;What I&#8217;ve found is the first drug gets a lot of buzz but falls out of favor when newer improved versions come out.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Invokana will reportedly cost $9 per pill.
