Aside from feeling purely overwhelmed at deciding what and how to choose what goes into our carts, along with our rushed, over-scheduled lives, we seem to spend more time thinking about what goes ON our bodies (like clothes and shoes) than what goes IN them.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"food labels\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/beware-four-tricky-and-common-nutrition-label-claims\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87408\" title=\"labels\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/labels.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/labels.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/labels-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So many <strong><a title=\"food label glossary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/food-label-glossary\/\">food labels are difficult to decode<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 perhaps the reason why 60-70 percent of what we purchase is unplanned. We often fall prey to items that wear descriptive names, like \u201cnatural\u201d and \u201cwholesome\u201d and \u201corganic\u201d\u2026these words are like magnets attracting us to their otherwise less attractive products. Studies have shown that when a food is deemed superior through a name, it is more likely that people would expect the food to be beneficial to their health. Trans-fat free fries, baked chips, and organic candies are all surrounded by <strong><a title=\"health food marketing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/10\/demystifying-the-health-halo-food-claims-lead-to-false-sense-of-health\/\">health halos<\/a><\/strong>, yet some halos are far from angelic.<\/p>\n<p>But you shouldn\u2019t have to be a mathematician, a librarian, or a dietitian to buy the right foods. The food label should be like the table of contents of a book \u2013 it should tell us what\u2019s inside. Unfortunately, misleading labels lurk throughout the store and I\u2019m here today to give you the inside scoop on what\u2019s really going on between the lines. Here are a few examples of some personal favorite \u2018wall of shame\u2019 claims where food companies are selling sound bites instead of sound advice.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"olive oil\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/beware-four-tricky-and-common-nutrition-label-claims\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87409\" title=\"olive oil\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/olive-oil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/olive-oil.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/olive-oil-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLight\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most often this term means the item has a third fewer calories than its full-calorie equivalent, as with light bread. But don\u2019t assume that &#8220;light&#8221; means low in calories. The term &#8220;light&#8221; is also used to describe such properties as texture and color, as long as the label explains the intent. For example, &#8220;light brown sugar&#8221; and &#8220;light and fluffy.&#8221; \u201cLight\u201d could also represent that a product\u2019s <strong><a title=\"reduced sodium\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/food-label-glossary\/reduced-sodium-food-labels\/\">sodium content has been reduced<\/a><\/strong> by at least 50 percent, as with soy sauce, where the light version has about half (but still a lot) of the sodium of comparable soy sauce. \u201cLight\u201d olive oil, however, contains the same calories and fat as regular olive oil \u2013 it just has a lighter-tasting flavor and a lighter color, but it\u2019s still 2,000 calories per cup!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Choose a real thick, dark, rich, heavy olive oil; it\u2019ll taste better, you\u2019ll use less and therefore, end up with less calories.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"kind bar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/beware-four-tricky-and-common-nutrition-label-claims\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87416\" title=\"kind bar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/kind-bar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/kind-bar.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/kind-bar-300x102.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSugar-Free and Fat-Free\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where \u201cfree\u201d can be costly! Many consumers connect <strong><a title=\"fat free foods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/food-label-glossary\/food-items-labeled-free\/\">sugar- and fat-free<\/a><\/strong> with calorie free, yet many of these seemingly unrestricted foods can be just as high in calories as their regular counterparts. Sugar-free foods typically use artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols that could lead to gas, bloat and diarrhea instead of a lower number on the scale. Moreover, sugar-free could be high in fat and fat-free can be high in sugar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Especially when choosing snacks, choose products with ingredients you can recognize. A combo of protein, carbs, and fats will provide the most satisfaction. As an example, when you look at a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kindsnacks.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">KIND Nuts &amp; Spices Bar<\/a><\/strong>, you can actually see what\u2019s in it with an ingredient list you can pronounce. You\u2019ll find around five grams of sugar on the label derived mostly from honey, with no artificial sugars. In general, always check ingredients lists to see where your fats and sugars are coming from.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"wheat bread\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/beware-four-tricky-and-common-nutrition-label-claims\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87410\" title=\"bread\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/bread.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/bread.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/bread-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWheat Bread\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if a bread label shows a picture of a stalk of wheat swaying in the wind, it\u2019s not necessarily carrying the benefits of whole grains. Any flour that comes from wheat can be called \u201cwheat flour\u201d even though it may be processed, bleached, and stripped of important nutrients. The bread\u2019s dark color could be a result of added molasses or caramel coloring; it doesn\u2019t mean this product will be bursting with fiber or whole grain goodness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Choose a product that has the words <strong><a title=\"what are whole grains\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/refined-enriched-whole-grain-understanding-what-these-words-mean\/\">\u201cwhole grain\u201d or \u201c100% whole wheat\u201d<\/a><\/strong> mentioned first on the ingredient list to be sure you\u2019re getting the nutrient-rich carbohydrate you\u2019re paying for.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"healthy oatmeal raisin cookies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/recipes\/oatmeal-raisin-cookies\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87411\" title=\"oatmeal cookie raisins\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/oatmeal-cookie-raisins.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/oatmeal-cookie-raisins.jpg 814w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/oatmeal-cookie-raisins-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c0g Trans Fat\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where \u20180\u2019 may not mean zero. Food manufacturers are allowed to round down and label any product that has less than a half gram of trans fat per serving as \u201c0 g trans fats.\u201d That means you could be getting 0.49 grams of trans fat in a single serving and not know it. Does 0.49 = 0? Not exactly. This may not seem like a big deal, but if you couple this with impractical serving sizes, the likelihood is that you could <strong><a title=\"foods with trans fat\" href=\"%20%20%20%20https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/02\/trans-fats-do-you-know-what-foods-have-them\/\">consume a lot more trans fat<\/a><\/strong> than you bargained for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: If you notice 0 grams of trans fat and the serving size is unrealistically small (like one cookie), and the product contains partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated fat\u2026step away from that box and go find a better one.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that, albeit somewhat flawed, the nutrition label is a powerful tool that should be there to guide consumers \u2013 not trick them. No matter what, you still need to read it before you eat it \u2013 especially on April 11th, National Read Your Nutrition Labels Day.
