Adequate rest is important for so many reasons. Health and fitness expert Stephanie Mansour of <strong><a title=\"step it up with steph\" href=\"http:\/\/stepitupwithsteph.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Step it Up with Steph<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0points out that adequate rest can help reset and cleanse our bodies to get back on track. &#8220;Some people even look at spring as a rebirth or revival and a chance to start over,&#8221; she said, suggesting more rest can be a &#8220;spring resolution&#8221; of sorts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87753\" alt=\"sleeping-woman\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/sleeping-woman.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/sleeping-woman.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/sleeping-woman-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"mary hartley\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/authors\/mary\/\">Mary Hartley<\/a><\/strong>, RD, agrees, noting<strong>\u00a0<a title=\"importance of sleep for good health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/importance-of-sleep-for-good-health\/\">good rest is necessary<\/a><\/strong> all year long. &#8220;Health wise, sleep is just as important as diet and exercise,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Getting enough sleep may also be a critical factor in a person\u2019s weight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While 7-8 hours is recommended and a new <strong><a title=\"sleep study\" href=\"http:\/\/todayhealth.today.com\/_news\/2013\/04\/19\/17827439-wake-up-9-hours-of-sleep-a-night-not-so-healthy?lite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">study<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>even<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>suggests Americans are getting more shut eye than usual, it&#8217;s also important to ensure it&#8217;s quality rest. Otherwise, the benefits of those precious ZZZs can slip right through our fingers.<\/p>\n<p>To help, we&#8217;ve gathered eight simple tips to help you start sleeping better and longer, tonight.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Avoid caffeine after noon and go light on alcohol<\/strong>, as\u00a0both can inhibit a good night&#8217;s rest. As well, Stephanie recommends drinking plenty of water <em>throughout<\/em> the day to stay hydrated. &#8220;If you wait until the nighttime to drink five glasses of water because you&#8217;re thirsty and dehydrated, chances are you&#8217;ll have to wake up to use the restroom more frequently,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Lie down at the same time every night<\/strong> to get your body on a regular sleep schedule.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Don\u2019t eat within three hours of bedtime<\/strong>, as it may inhibit your body from winding down.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Get regular exercise<\/strong>, but <strong><a title=\"when to exercise\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/when-to-exercise-may-not-matter-after-all\/\">not within three hours of bedtime<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Keep the bedroom dark and cool<\/strong>. In addition, make sure your bed itself is comfortable and conducive to a deep sleep. Stephanie recommends sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs to support your lower back. Alternatively, sleep on your back with a pillow underneath your knees.<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>Keep electronics out of the bedroom<\/strong>, suggests Mary. She says things like the TV, computer, smart phone are\u00a0stimulating for the brain and not conducive to slowing down your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>Relax before bedtime<\/strong>, be it with a hot bath, soothing music or relaxing book, Mary suggests. Stephanie adds that taking a few deep breaths or practicing\u00a0<strong><a title=\"gentle yoga poses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/saturday-morning-drill-gentle-springtime-yoga-for-flexibility\/\">gentle yoga poses<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>can also be helpful.<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Be sure that a medical symptom\u00a0is not interfering with sleep<\/strong>.
