But the one thing you&#8217;ll notice in every shot of him is the constant itching. After delivering at a healthy eight pounds, Leah&#8217;s baby quickly lost a pound and doctors were alarmed. A consummate<strong> <a title=\"breastfeeding health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/breastfeeding\">supporter of breastfeeding<\/a><\/strong>, Leah was asked to supplement with formula to ensure her newborn was getting the nutrients and weight gain he needed. The situation quickly unraveled to a mother&#8217;s worst nightmare &#8211; helplessly watching your sick child.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88430\" alt=\"similacnogmo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/similacnogmo.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/similacnogmo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/similacnogmo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/similacnogmo-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today, her son &#8220;is severely allergic to the <strong><a title=\"most common food allergies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/food-allergies\">top 8 food allergens<\/a><\/strong>: tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy, dairy, eggs, seafood &amp; shellfish,&#8221; as well as pet dander. Leah says she hasn&#8217;t seen pure skin on him since they brought him home. &#8220;He&#8217;s never completely cleared up,&#8221; she says of a chronic battle with his numerous food and environmental allergens. She emotionally describes the range in &#8220;just itching&#8221; for mild eczema breakouts to severe breakouts where his rashes are actually seeping. &#8220;His whole body looks like it&#8217;s covered in burns,&#8221; she cries.<\/p>\n<p>While this baby&#8217;s situation is certainly an extreme case, it&#8217;s still an example of the 400% rise in allergies among children since the 1990s. The biggest change since that time is our food &#8211; namely the <strong><a title=\"GMOs in grocery store food\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/up-to-70-of-supermarket-food-is-genetically-modified\/\">85% grocery store items<\/a><\/strong>, including Similac formula, that have GMOs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Children are the most likely to be adversely effected by toxins and other dietary problems&#8221; related to GM foods, biologist David Schubert of the Salk Institute warned in a report at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsibletechnology.org\/doctors-warn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ResponsibleTechnology.org<\/a><\/strong>. He called children &#8220;experimental animals.&#8221; That&#8217;s a pretty scary comparison and one that moms like Leah are no longer willing to stand for.<\/p>\n<p>Allergies are one of the key problems associated with the <strong><a title=\"GMO brands\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/10\/major-organic-brands-like-kashi-and-naked-funding-anti-gmo-labeling-campaigns\/\">presence of GMO ingredients in food<\/a><\/strong>. And for the many reasons that moms turn to formula to feed their infants, no choices for a healthier alternative exist in the US.
