While I love the idea of rallying parents to go candy free on Halloween, I think her approach and tactics are way out of line.<\/p>\n<p>Found via Twitter, here is a copy of the letter \u201canony-mom\u201d is distributing in lieu of candy on Halloween.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"halloween obesity letter fargo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/10\/anonymous-mom-brazenly-shames-trick-or-treaters-with-obesity-letter-in-lieu-of-halloween-candy\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-92686\" alt=\"fargo mom obesity letter halloween\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/fargo-mom-obesity-letter-halloween.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/fargo-mom-obesity-letter-halloween.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/fargo-mom-obesity-letter-halloween-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn a radio interview, she said the purpose is to \u201csend a message to the parents of the kids that are really overweight.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dietsinreview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tweet us &#8211; What do you think?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/obesity\/facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">CDC<\/a><\/strong> cites one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, with 70 percent of youth presenting at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. So the likelihood of a child who is definitively overweight receiving this letter is high. But is it this woman\u2019s place to call it out?<\/p>\n<p>How do we know if she\u2019s even qualified to make such blind assessments? She won\u2019t sign the letter, nor reveal her identity (which is a whole other thing I take issue with), so we can\u2019t look in to her background, education, or resume. We\u2019re going to wager a guess that she\u2019s not a dietitian, doctor, or related profession.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"common misspelled words in health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/10\/keep-the-tits-in-dietitian-the-12-most-commonly-misspelled-words-in-health-and-fitness\/\">I\u2019m kind of obsessed with both good health and proper English<\/a><\/strong>, so I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m more irritated by her brazen attempt to shame a bunch of neighborhood kids or her complete lack of editing to catch the errant typos, punctuation, and grammar mistakes. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And while her letter may be sent with the best of intentions, her delivery is all wrong. <strong><a title=\"fat shaming commercials\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/new-fat-shaming-commercials-do-more-harm-than-good-in-obesity-prevention-efforts\/\">We can\u2019t shame<\/a><\/strong>, we have to educate. We have to be supportive. Why not hand out oranges or apples with a small kitschy note that says something like \u201cAn apple a day keeps childhood obesity away! This year, in light of the declining health of our children, I\u2019m sharing fruit instead of the junk that is Halloween candy in an effort to remind everyone that the treats don\u2019t have to be bad for us. Let\u2019s work together to help our kids!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d likely still be mocked and get hard hit with a few dozen eggs, but there would be some substance to her save-the-village antics. She wouldn\u2019t look like a judgmental, holier-than-thou witch, either.<\/p>\n<p>This mom was quoted as saying it\u2019s irresponsible for parents to send their overweight children out \u201clooking for free candy just because all the other kids are doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few questions I\u2019m left with include, does she have children? How healthy are they? What\u2019s her current weight and health status?
