It&#8217;s not that I dislike walking or running &#8211; <strong><a title=\"learn to like running\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/how-i-changed-my-outlook-on-running-and-actually-grew-to-like-it\/\">I actually kind of like it<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; but to me, walking or running indoors can get extremely boring. There&#8217;s something about the other machines (like the elliptical and stairmill) that just seem to hold my interest more and make my workout more enjoyable. That being said, I know that <strong><a title=\"Treadmill is the Best Cardio Workout\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/05\/what-you-didnt-know-about-running-on-treadmills\/\">running on a treadmill<\/a><\/strong> can provide a great cardiovascular workout.<\/p>\n<p>I almost always run outdoors and my surface of choice is definitely dirt. Unfortunately, because of weather and other factors, that&#8217;s not always possible. Recently, I decided to give the treadmill another chance, with a different approach this time.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"treadmill \" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/fire-up-your-glutes-with-an-incline-interval-workout-for-the-treadmill\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-93133\" alt=\"treadmill\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/treadmill.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/treadmill.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/treadmill-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m an avid hiker and walking up an incline is often a big part of my hikes. Hiking can be a great cardiovascular and fat-burning workout because it tones your lower body and (depending on the trail) can alternate between high and low intensity.<\/p>\n<p>I tried utilizing the treadmill to get the same benefits of a hike by adjusting the incline and speed during a thirty minute period, which would offer the same type of<strong> <a title=\"Interval Training\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/interval-training-may-be-the-best-way-to-tone-up\/\">interval training<\/a> <\/strong>that I naturally get while hiking. Walking at an incline burns more calories than walking on a level surface because your body has to work much harder to push itself uphill. You&#8217;ll definitely feel your heart pumping faster as the incline percentage increases, and it will drop as you come back down to level ground.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This incline interval workout is to be done on the treadmill, but it&#8217;s far from boring. In fact, it seemed to go by quickly! Since the workout is designed to change your speed and incline every few minutes, you don&#8217;t stay in one &#8220;place&#8221; long enough to get bored. You&#8217;ll be working at moderate to high intensity for a few minutes at a time followed by brief periods of recovery. One factor that will make a <strong>huge<\/strong> difference in this workout &#8211; <strong>don&#8217;t hold on to the machine!<\/strong> You will be greatly decreasing the intensity of your workout by holding on to the front or sides of the treadmill, thus making it less effective overall.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows the time spent in each interval and the incline percentage and speed to set on the treadmill during that period. The workout includes a two minute warm-up and cool-down, in which you will be walking at an easy to moderate pace at a slight incline. In total, you will have walked two miles by the end of the workout.
