The answer seems obvious: We\u2019re taking in more calories than we expend. But why is that? Check out these seven common weight gain triggers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-92863\" alt=\"obesity soda\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/obesity-soda.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/obesity-soda.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/obesity-soda-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>We slurp down sugary drinks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This includes sodas, fruit drinks, sweetened iced tea and other beverages that cost about 140 to 150 calories per 12-ounce serving. They are a major source of added sugar in our diet. Guzzle just one can daily on top of <strong><a title=\"bmr calculator\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/resources\/\">your actual calorie needs<\/a><\/strong> and you could gain 15 pounds a year. A Canadian study that tracked toddlers found that those who drank more sugary beverages were 2.5 times more likely to be overweight compared to those who didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We consume too little fiber.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This comes from not eating enough fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Aside from making you feel fuller on fewer calories (and thus, satisfying appetite), <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebestlife.com\/article-archive\/how-fiber-can-help-you-lose-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">fiber<\/a> <\/strong>may also promote a slimming gut flora, the population of trillions of bacteria that reside in our gut that are thought to influence everything from immunity to anxiety to obesity risk.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re wired for obesity.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What you ate as a fetus, infant and small child can affect your genes\u2014actually programming them to make you fatter. For instance, if a mom is overweight or obese during her pregnancy, it\u2019s more likely that that <strong><a title=\"obesity in the womb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/obesity-prevention-begins-in-the-womb-moms-blood-sugar-affects-babys-development\/\">child will become overweight as an adult<\/a><\/strong>. If that same mom has a second child when she\u2019s not overweight, the odds are much lower that child number two will go on to become an overweight adult. Her two children share similar genetics, but their in utero environment was different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We don\u2019t exercise. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40 percent of <strong><a title=\"american fitness statistics\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/americans-like-their-workouts-solo-and-seldom-new-research-finds-only-20-percent-are-exercising\/\">Americans get virtually no exercise<\/a><\/strong>. In states where people get the least amount of physical activity\u2014Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama\u2014obesity rates are highest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We don\u2019t have the resources. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To stay in shape, you need the education to pick the right foods, the money to buy them, and the time to get to the gym (working two jobs to make ends meet makes this tough). The poorest ethnic groups in the U.S.\u2014blacks and Hispanics\u2014have up to 47 percent higher obesity rates than the generally wealthier whites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We skimp on sleep. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Studies show that people who sleep less than seven hours nightly are more likely to be obese than those who sleep seven to eight hours.
