A new vegetarian and vegan diet pyramid was released by\u00a0<strong><a title=\"oldways\" href=\"http:\/\/oldwayspt.org\/resources\/heritage-pyramids\/vegetarian-diet-pyramid\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oldways<\/a><\/strong> in response to the <strong><a title=\"how to be vegan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/going-vegan-5-ways-to-transition-to-a-plant-based-diet\/\">growing popularity of meatless diets<\/a><\/strong>. The pyramid is an updated version of the one created in 1997 and places more emphasis on fruits and vegetables than the original.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"vegan food pyramid\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/the-first-vegan-food-pyramid-focuses-on-more-fresh-fruits-and-vegetables\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-93266\" alt=\"vegetarian diet pyramid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/vegetarian-diet-pyramid.jpeg\" width=\"600\" height=\"776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/vegetarian-diet-pyramid.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/vegetarian-diet-pyramid-231x300.jpeg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Foods are broken down into categories, much like with<strong> <a title=\"food pyramid\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diets\/My_Pyramid\/\">the traditional food pyramid<\/a><\/strong>. Whole grains have the most recommended servings, with 5-8 per day, followed by vegetables (4-6 servings), and fruits (3-4\u00a0servings). Beans, peas, lentils and soy make up another level of the\u00a0pyramid, then nuts, peanuts, seeds and peanut\/nut butters. Finally on the top levels are herbs, spices and plant oils, and eggs and\/or dairy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s beautifully illustrated, and one of the most astonishing things to me is if you put your fingers over the top, it&#8217;s vegan,&#8221; said Oldways president Sara Baer-Sinnott in an interview with the <strong><a href=\"%20http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/ellen-kanner\/meatless-monday-oldways_b_4282040.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Huffington Post<\/a><\/strong>. &#8220;In the past, we didn&#8217;t really account for vegans. Personally, I love cheese. But here, there&#8217;s not much difference\u00a0between vegan and vegetarian.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 1997, the pyramid did not place much emphasis on fresh produce.\u00a0Though it was designed as a guide for vegetarian diets, the images of fruits and vegetables were put off to the side and not emphasized at all. Now, they hold the largest space on the pyramid and show Oldways\u2019 continuing commitment to whole, unprocessed and traditional foods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not about food fads, we&#8217;re about traditions, taking the best of the past and bringing it forward,&#8221; Baer-Sinnott said. &#8220;It&#8217;s delicious,\u00a0not expensive and it brings family and community together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To create the pyramid, a team of 10 scientists were gathered. They reviewed the data on plant-based diets that had been gathered over the years, and provided their recommendations as to how the pyramid should be structured. Because <strong><a title=\"types of vegetarian\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/degrees-of-vegetarianism\/\">multiple variations of vegetarian diets<\/a> <\/strong>have existed in different cultures throughout history, there was plenty of information on which to base the pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/oldwayspt.org\/resources\/heritage-pyramids\/vegetarian-diet-pyramid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oldways website<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cA plant-based diet can be an excellent source of all the necessary nutrients (protein, fats,\u00a0carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and all nine essential amino acids) for optimum health, particularly when a wide variety of foods are eaten each day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The site also suggests that vegetarians, and especially vegans, may need to add supplements to their diet to ensure that they are getting all the nutrients their bodies require.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the goal of Oldways to use their pyramid to help any who are interested in adopting a meatless diet, but unsure how to\u00a0incorporate it into their daily lives.
