We&#8217;ve broken down the facts about this season&#8217;s bugs to help keep you healthy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Flu<br \/>\n<\/strong>(caused by influenza viruses)<\/p>\n<p><em>Symptoms:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever, potentially high<\/li>\n<li>Cough<\/li>\n<li>Runny nose\/stuffiness<\/li>\n<li>Sore throat<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"yoga when sick\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/practice-yoga-from-your-bed-when-the-flu-has-you-beat\/\">Muscle Aches<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><\/strong>Lethargy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Treatment:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DON&#8217;T<\/strong>\u00a0mistake the flu for a bad cold. Though symptoms are similar, usually the flu feels worse than your average cold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DO<\/strong>\u00a0avoid cold medications if you have the flu. They won&#8217;t help much with your symptoms since the flu and colds are caused by different viruses.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">DON&#8217;T <\/strong>s<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">pread the virus to friends, family, and coworkers. If you think you have the flu it&#8217;s best to stay home. If you have a fever, stay home until you&#8217;re fever free for 24 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">DO<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0get the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><a title=\"fight the flu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/12\/8-ways-to-fight-the-flu\/\">flu vaccine<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">. Contrary to what you may have heard, getting the vaccine will not give you the flu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colds<br \/>\n<\/strong>(Most commonly caused by the rhinovirus, but a cold can be caused by multiple different viruses.)<\/p>\n<p><em>Symptoms:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sneezing<\/li>\n<li>Runny nose\/stuffiness<\/li>\n<li>Sore throat<\/li>\n<li>Coughing<\/li>\n<li>Watery Eyes<\/li>\n<li>Mild Headache<\/li>\n<li>Mild Body Aches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Treatment:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DON&#8217;T<\/strong>\u00a0take antibiotics. They will not help a cold; usually over the counter medication will alleviate suffering from symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DO<\/strong>\u00a0sip on\u00a0<strong><a title=\"soup recipes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/six-healthy-and-comforting-cold-weather-soups\/\">chicken soup<\/a><\/strong>. It has been shown to help with the common cold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DON&#8217;T<\/strong>\u00a0avoid the outdoors. Cold weather does not cause colds, though cold and dry conditions can make you more susceptible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DO <\/strong>continue to<strong> <a title=\"fit people healthier\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/fit-people-catch-fewer-colds\/\">exercise<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Contrary to popular belief, light to moderate exercise can actually help you get over a cold sooner.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, if you&#8217;re feeling under the weather the best things you can do is stay home and get some rest. Both colds and the flu are contagious and spread easily from person to person. Your best defense is to wash your hands frequently, especially if you\u2019ve come in contact with someone who may have the cold or flu. Exercising regularly, staying hydrated, and getting enough <strong><a title=\"vitamin c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/12\/vitamin-guide-a-to-zinc-vitamin-c\/\">Vitamin C<\/a><\/strong> in your diet can also help prevent illness.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, neither the flu nor a cold requires a trip to the doctor&#8217;s office.
