So when my friend Beth arrived last week from Colorado I had all of my hot spots queued up: Pok Pok for its Asian Wings, Salt and Straw for its Salted Caramel Ice Cream, and Olympic Provisions for its killer brunch. But of all of the indulgences we shared, the one I was most worried about burning off was a large plate of biscuits and gravy from Portland&#8217;s J&amp;M Cafe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/biscuits-and-gravy-e1389390245316.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-94794\" alt=\"biscuits and gravy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/biscuits-and-gravy-e1389390245316.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did some searching online and found a big range for the calorie count in a serving of biscuits and gravy\u2014estimates were anywhere between 200 and 530 calories. Judging from the flakiness of the biscuits, the size of the serving, and the sausage that was blended into the thick gravy, I&#8217;m going to guess the plate I ate was packed with about 450 calories. Eek!<\/p>\n<p>Just how does one burn off a meal of that size? I grabbed a calculator\u2014and the American College of Sports Medicine&#8217;s Compendium of Physical Activities\u2014to find out. Here are three ways I could have burned off a 450 calorie breakfast of biscuits and gravy:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Hiking is a good workout\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/09\/5-reasons-why-hiking-is-a-good-workout\/\">hiking\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>for 63 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/hiking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-94788\" alt=\"hiking\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/hiking-e1389389205309.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Jump rope workout\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/the-ultimate-jump-rope-workout\/\">jumping rope<\/a><\/strong> for 38 minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/jump-rope.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-94789 aligncenter\" alt=\"jump rope\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/jump-rope-e1389389246947.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"587\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Or by cruising around town by\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Get started bicycling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/07\/beginners-guide-to-cycling\/\">bike<\/a> <\/strong>for 95 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/bicycling-e1389389656738.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-94792\" alt=\"bicycling\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/bicycling-e1389389656738.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately we went hiking.
