Drumroll please&#8230;. Indeed, strength training and resistance exercises (even <a title=\"yoga for fitness\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/slideshows\/yoga-for-fitness\/introduction-to-yoga-for-fitness\/\">yoga<\/a>\u00a0and <strong><a title=\"Pilates\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/topics\/pilates\/\">Pilates<\/a><\/strong>!) are associated with a\u00a0lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Best of all, when these exercises are done in conjunction with your aerobic exercise, women\u2019s risk drops by one-third!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the scoop: In a landmark Harvard School of Medicine study, researchers followed almost 100,000 middle-aged and older women who self-reported their amount of aerobic exercise (<strong><a title=\"jogging\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/05\/new-study-shows-even-moderate-jogging-can-add-years-to-your-life\/\">jogging<\/a><\/strong>, biking, etc), resistance exercise (using weights or body weight exercises), and lower intensity muscular conditioning exercise (like yoga, stretching, Pilates). Those who did the equivalent of 15 minutes of strength work after 40 minutes of cardio 4-times a week fared best, reducing their risk by around 33 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to get reduce your risk? Push-ups against the wall, or resting your knees on the ground, it\u2019s all good. Remember to keep your core engaged and shoulders relaxed away from your ears.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/triceps-dip-e1393979425359.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-96347\" alt=\"Dips 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/triceps-dip-e1393979425359.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do 60 seconds of triceps dips.\u00a0<\/strong>Using a chair, step, or just sitting on the floor, place your hands by your hips and point your fingers towards your toes. Press your hips up and keep them there! Slowly bend and straighten your elbows without setting your hips down on the floor or chair. A big time burn for the back of your arms! Hold at the top of your push-up position. You may also place your elbows on the floor for forearm plank. Keep your whole body in one long line from your heels to the top of your head and don\u2019t forget to breathe!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/lunge-e1393979523174.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-96342\" alt=\"lunge\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/lunge-e1393979523174.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>60 seconds of lunges.<\/strong>\u00a0Step your right foot in front far enough so when you bend your knees, you make 90 angles with both legs. Push back to your start position for one rep. Repeat for 30 seconds then switch legs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/squat-e1393979541312.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-96346\" alt=\"squat\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/squat-e1393979541312.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do 60 seconds of squats.\u00a0<\/strong>Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and your weight in your heels. Bend your knees as if sitting into a chair. Holding your tummy tight, press back to standing.
