If so, you may have lactose intolerance, or an inability to properly digest dairy products, says\u00a0Karen Kafer, RDN, a representative with the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaldairycouncil.org\/\u200e\" target=\"_blank\">National Dairy Council<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/dairy-e1393010560802.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-96060\" alt=\"dairy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/dairy-e1393010560802.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"458\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But being lactose intolerant doesn&#8217;t mean you must forgo dairy at every meal. According to Kafer, the\u00a0body produces an enzyme called\u00a0<i>lactase<\/i>\u00a0to help digest the\u00a0lactose\u00a0in milk. As we age, the body sometimes produces less lactase than it did from childhood, making it hard to break down dairy. However, many people with\u00a0lactose\u00a0intolerance can still tolerate at least 12 grams of\u00a0lactose\u00a0(equivalent to 1 cup of low-fat and fat-free milk or yogurt) in one sitting, with little to no discomfort. So, being diagnosed with the condition simply means that you may need to moderate your intake.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Think you may be lactose intolerant?\u00a0To get a clear diagnosis,\u00a0ask your doctor for the Breath Hydrogen Test, which diagnoses the condition. Kafer says you should never self-diagnose. After all, the symptoms associated with trouble digest dairy can also be the result of other conditions.<\/p>\n<p>If your test results say that you are indeed intolerant, Kafer suggests these techniques for enjoying dairy without discomfort:<\/p>\n<p><b>Try It.<\/b>\u00a0Opt for<strong><a title=\"Dairy products for the lactose free \" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/lactose-intolerant-discover-which-dairy-products-you-can-still-enjoy\/\"> low-lactose and lactose-free milk and milk products<\/a><\/strong>. They are real milk products, just without the\u00a0lactose. They taste great and provide the same nutrients as regular dairy foods.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sip It.<\/b>\u00a0Start with a small amount of milk daily and increase slowly over several days or weeks to determine tolerance.<\/p>\n<p><b>Stir It.<\/b>\u00a0Mix milk with other foods, such as <strong><a title=\"Butternut squash apple soup\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/recipes\/roasted-butternut-squash-and-apple-soup\/\">soups<\/a><\/strong> and cereal; blend with fruit or drink milk with meals. Solid foods help slow digestion and allow the body more time to digest\u00a0lactose.<\/p>\n<p><b>Slice It.\u00a0<\/b>Top sandwiches or crackers with natural cheeses such as Cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, and Swiss. These cheeses contain small amounts of\u00a0lactose.<\/p>\n<p><b>Shred It.\u00a0<\/b>Shred your favorite low-fat and fat-free cheese onto veggies, pastas, and <strong><a title=\"Italian meat and cheese salad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/recipes\/italian-meat-and-cheese\/\">salads<\/a><\/strong>. It\u2019s an easy way to get dairy that contains minimal amounts of\u00a0lactose.<\/p>\n<p><b>Spoon It.\u00a0<\/b>Enjoy easy-to-digest yogurt. The live and active cultures in yogurt help to digest\u00a0lactose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supplement It:<\/strong> Lactase tablets consumed with low-fat and fat-free dairy foods naturally digest the\u00a0lactose\u00a0inside your gut.
