The Feds Create BS-Free Nutrition Label, Give Americans Reality Check"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The White House and the Food and Drug Administration have <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/NewsEvents\/Newsroom\/PressAnnouncements\/ucm387418.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced their plan<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0today to update the nutrition facts label on food packages, a move that is being heralded and praised by nutrition experts and enthusiasts alike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"new nutrition label\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/02\/finally-the-feds-create-bs-free-nutrition-label-give-americans-reality-check\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96235 aligncenter\" alt=\"new nutrition label\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/new-nutrition-label.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/new-nutrition-label.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/new-nutrition-label-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Proposed changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Calories displayed more prominently.<\/strong> Congress and the FDA are pushing for a larger, bolded font for calories and all parts of the label that affect obesity, diabetes and heart disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Serving Size.<\/strong> Have you ever noticed a bottle of soda actually contains 2.5 servings, while the average American drinks the whole thing in one sitting? <strong><a title=\"Mary Hartley\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/authors\/mary\/\">Mary Hartley, RD<\/a><\/strong>, our resident nutrition expert, thinks this means we are all in for a big reality check. The new label will change the <strong><a title=\"what is serving size\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/serving-size-is-not-just-a-suggestion\/\">serving size<\/a><\/strong> from what we should eat to what people actually consume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Detailed sugar labeling.<\/strong> The improved labels will have a new line for &#8220;added sugars,&#8221; or sugars not occurring naturally\u00a0and have been including only after chemical processing (think naturally-occurring lactose in yogurt vs. added aspartame in a Yoplait). What does Hartley have to say about that? &#8220;<em>Finally<\/em>.&#8221;<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Calories from fat<\/em> is removed<\/strong>. This factor only added more confusion than information. Plus, it&#8217;s the type of fat that&#8217;s <a title=\"Skinny on Fats\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/01\/the-skinny-on-fat-why-this-nutrient-is-essential-for-weight-loss\/\"><strong>more important anyway<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Detailed vitamin listing.<\/strong> New labels will highlight nutrients that Americans are chronically deficient of, like potassium and vitamin D.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg said the new label will include &#8220;the latest in nutrition science, as more has been learned about the connection between what we eat and the development of serious chronic diseases of Americans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This, combined with news late last year that the <strong><a title=\"trans fat ban\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/dietitians-speak-out-in-support-of-the-trans-fat-ban-proposed-by-the-fda\/\">FDA will move to ban trans fat<\/a><\/strong> and the Affordable Care Act&#8217;s requirement of <strong><a title=\"menu calories\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/the-skinny-on-menu-calories-pros-and-cons-of-published-calorie-counts\/\">published calories on restaurant menus<\/a> <\/strong>shows that the government may finally be taking the health epidemic of our citizens seriously.
