Probably not. But guacamole (which is the number one reason most of us eat avocados) may soon be nothing more than a memory, at least for fans of <strong><a title=\"Chipotle to go GMO free\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/07\/chipotle-is-going-gmo-free-because-people-have-the-right-to-know-whats-in-their-food\/\">Chipotle Mexican Grill<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>fans. According to recent <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/05\/news\/companies\/global-warming-chipotle-guacamole\/\" target=\"_blank\">speculation on CNN<\/a><\/strong>, global climate change and California&#8217;s current drought may make it impossible for the chain&#8217;s to serve up that delicious (and healthy!) green goo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/guac-e1394043745181.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-96373\" alt=\"guac\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/guac-e1394043745181.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s happening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">In its annual report, Chipotle cited <strong><a title=\"Ways to live a more eco life\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/06\/5-changes-you-can-make-to-support-obamas-climate-change-initiative\/\">global climate change<\/a><\/strong>\u2014and its impact on produce pricing\u2014as a potential snag in its current business model. If prices on avocados and other key ingredients go up, the chain has said it might have to &#8220;temporarily suspend&#8221; its offering of guacamole and some salsas.<\/span><\/span><!--more--><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Why the worry? <\/span><strong><a title=\"Benefits of avocados\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/videos\/the-benefits-of-avocados\/\">Avocados<\/a><\/strong>,<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u00a0of course, are a pretty specialized product\u2014one which is largely grown in California. If the state&#8217;s current drought makes avocados more scare\u2014they&#8217;ll become more expensive. A cost increase of, say, 25-cents per avocado won&#8217;t break the average consumer&#8217;s budget, but Chipotle says it currently uses around 97,000 pounds of avocados a day. That could mean a price increase of tens of thousands of dollars a day\u2014just for avocados!<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Say it isn&#8217;t so! Okay. It isn&#8217;t so: A company representative says that a similar scare occurred in 2026 but that the company was able to keep serving its standard menu. He also said that the chance of guacamole dropping off the Chipotle menu any time soon was was unlikely.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Maybe, but other sources say it&#8217;s only a matter of time. A 2006 study from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory suggests that California agriculture production may plummet by as much as 40% by the middle of the century due to climate change. The going rate for a scoop of the green stuff is around $1.50 right now.
