Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) made a decision that shows it\u00a0agrees wholeheartedly,\u00a0advising people to halve the\u00a0<strong><a title=\"sugar biggest health threat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/sugar-is-our-biggest-national-health-threat-and-candy-may-be-the-biggest-gun\/\">amount of sugar in their diet<\/a><\/strong>, from a recommended 10-percent to five-percent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/granulated-sugar.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96370\" alt=\"granulated sugar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/granulated-sugar.jpeg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/granulated-sugar.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/granulated-sugar-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This dramatic shift is the first change in recommendation since 2002. &#8220;It is a tragedy that it has taken 10 years for the WHO to think about changing their recommendation on sugar,&#8221; nutritionist and campaigner Katharine Jenner\u00a0told BBC News. We totally agree.<\/p>\n<p>Though the change has taken a while, it&#8217;s sure to make some waves now that it&#8217;s arrived. Here&#8217;s what you can expect:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The old recommendation of 10-percent worked out to about 50g of sugar a day for an adult of normal weight. The WHO now says 25g of sugar a day is ideal.<\/li>\n<li>According to a statement from the WHO, &#8220;The new draft guideline also proposes that sugars should be less than 10-percent of total energy intake per day. It further suggests that a reduction to below five-percent of total energy intake per day would have additional benefits.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Suggested limits apply to <strong><a title=\"different types of sugar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/10\/sugar-101-know-the-different-types-of-sugar-on-the-market\/\">all sugars<\/a><\/strong> added to food and sugar naturally present in honey syrups, fruit juices, and fruit concentrates.<\/li>\n<li>A study of obesity found sugar did not directly cause obesity, but did <strong><a title=\"is sugar worse than salt\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/04\/sugar-and-salt-the-battle-to-see-which-kills-more-of-us\/\">contribute to overall weight gain<\/a><\/strong>.
