Lisa Lillien, author of the new book\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hungry-girl.com\/diet\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Hungry Girl Diet<\/i><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 and founder of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hungry-girl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hungry-Girl.com<\/a><\/strong>, spills her top tips for saving money while scoring healthy groceries:<\/p>\n<p><b>Bring a list!<\/b>\u00a0 Stay on task and avoid those impulse buys for the sake of your wallet AND your healthy-eating habits. (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hungry-girl.com\/biteout\/show\/HGs-2014-supermarket-list\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s HG&#8217;s most updated supermarket list<\/a><\/strong>, if you need some inspiration!)<\/p>\n<p><b>Two words: Virtual couponing.<\/b>\u00a0 Sure, you can clip from the circulars, but you can also surf the Internet for online coupons\u2014they&#8217;re everywhere and they could save you lots of cash! Also, ALWAYS apply for those supermarket discount cards.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>Hit up your local supercenters to save some serious dough.<\/b>\u00a0 Sign up for a yearly membership\u00a0 at Costco, Sam&#8217;s Club, or BJ&#8217;s\u2014get the stuff you use daily in bulk, especially shelf-stable finds.<\/p>\n<p><b>It&#8217;s all about DIY portion control.<\/b>\u00a0 As much as I love single-serving snacks, they&#8217;re not always budget friendly. Buy large packages instead, and\u00a0 <i>immediately<\/i>\u00a0 break the contents down into portion-controlled baggies or sealable containers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Frozen food is your chilly friend!<\/b>\u00a0 Freezer-aisle fruits and veggies are usually cheaper than fresh, and they\u00a0 keep a LOT longer (so you can stock up!). Love seafood? Fish and shrimp are a little pricey at the seafood counter but they&#8217;re generally less expensive when frozen.<\/p>\n<p><b>Show the world you don&#8217;t care about fancy labels&#8230;<\/b>\u00a0 <b>Go generic!\u00a0 <\/b>Most grocery stores stock generic versions of popular food items at a fraction of the brand-name price. Pick those instead\u2014they&#8217;re often nearly identical.<\/p>\n<p><b>See a deal? Stock up!<\/b>\u00a0 This tip is mostly applicable to nonperishable goods, like canned foods and pantry staples. In the produce section, whatever&#8217;s in season is usually cheaper, since the stores need to sell a lot FAST.\u00a0 So shop seasonal!<\/p>\n<p><b>Buy multitaskers.<\/b>\u00a0 For example, sour cream is good, but you&#8217;re not gonna eat it with a spoon. Choosing fat-free plain yogurt (Greek or regular) will give you more options.
