As we learned this week, sometimes it actually is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Facebook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-99133\" alt=\"Facebook\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Facebook.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Facebook.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Facebook-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was recently revealed that for a week in early 2026, <strong><a title=\"healthy companies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/health-focused-startup-ceos-are-a-health-trend-worth-adopting\/\">Facebook<\/a><\/strong> tweaked the content almost 690,000 users saw on their Timelines. Some were shown more positive posts, while others were shown more negative posts. This was done as an experiment by researchers from Cornell, the University of California, San Francisco, and Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The results were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.<\/p>\n<p>Through the study it was found that users who saw more negative content were slightly more likely to produce <strong><a title=\"social media and mood\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/07\/foodmood-tracks-twitter-to-identify-a-food-emotion-connection\/\">negative content<\/a> <\/strong>themselves. Those who saw more positive posts responded with positive posts of their own. The study also proved that Facebook has the ability to mess with our mental states, which is a little spooky.<\/p>\n<p>When you look at this as an experiment, you would likely agree that the results are fairly conclusive and show the mood of others has some level of impact on <strong><a title=\"improve mood with yoga\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/05\/yoga-turns-a-bad-mood-in-to-a-good-day\/\">your own mood<\/a><\/strong>. When you look at this as the manipulation of the moods of thousands of people, you may think it&#8217;s a little (or a lot) shady.<\/p>\n<p>Though the company&#8217;s terms of service allow Facebook to conduct this type of research, users on the whole have reacted with anger and questions on the experiment&#8217;s ethicality.<\/p>\n<p>Some have taken their frustration to an extreme, accusing Facebook of harming users who may have already been depressed or have anxiety problems by showing them more negative posts than usual.<\/p>\n<p>Adam D. I.
