For years, there was no butter in my kitchen because it contains a lot of saturated fat, which nutrition scientists believed could lead to heart disease and possibly increase the risk for cancer and even dementia. But being a nutritionist, I keep up with the food research, and things change.\u00a0I started thinking of how my diet has changed over the past decade, and here are the main shifts; the ways I changed my own diet for the better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I ENJOY BUTTER.<\/strong> Even after margarine was exposed as a <strong><a title=\"trans fat ban\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/11\/dietitians-speak-out-in-support-of-the-trans-fat-ban-proposed-by-the-fda\/\">trans fat nightmare<\/a><\/strong>, I still avoided butter because 63 percent of the fat in butter is saturated. I went along with the scientific thinking: If you eat too much saturated fat, levels of LDL (\u201cbad\u201d cholesterol) rise, and people with higher LDL are more likely to develop heart disease.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But recently, scientists have admitted that a critical dot isn\u2019t connecting: Studies do not show that people who <strong><a title=\"saturated fat and heart disease\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/03\/saturated-fats-dont-cause-heart-disease-new-research-reveals\/\">eat more saturated fat are at an increased risk for heart disease<\/a><\/strong>. It could be that their type of LDL (yes, there are different types of LDL, and yes, nutrition is a complex field!) isn\u2019t the most dangerous one. Or maybe because saturated fat also raises levels of HDL (\u201cgood\u201d cholesterol); the two counterbalance each other. Whatever the reason, experts are beginning to rethink their stance on saturated fat.<\/p>\n<p>Until the science is clearer, I\u2019m still limiting my butter. I enjoy a teaspoon on average daily. I\u2019m also <strong><a title=\"high fat cheese is better\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/08\/the-scientific-quest-for-a-healthy-cheese-leaves-us-flavorless\/\">eating a little more full-fat cheese<\/a><\/strong> than I used to (another source of saturated fat).<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;M STRICT WITH STARCHES<\/strong>. I\u2019ve always been a whole grain devot\u00e9e\u2014the only time a piece of white bread crosses my lips is at a restaurant, and it has to be exceptionally delicious to earn the privilege. But I was always liberal with oats, whole grain bread, bulgur wheat, quinoa and other whole grains.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I\u2019m older and have to be a tad more careful about calories, it\u2019s these healthy grains I\u2019m trimming slightly. That\u2019s because they\u2019re still high in calories. Breakfast is always high-carb, but I\u2019m more careful the rest of the day\u2014having an open-faced sandwich for lunch instead of two slices of bread, and maybe no starchy foods at dinner (which is usually fish and a big salad). I love sweets\u2014not the super-sweet kind, but dark chocolate or cookies and cakes that aren\u2019t crazy-sugary. Even still, these are rife with added sugar (as opposed to sugar naturally found in fruit or milk; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebestlife.com\/article-archive\/sugar-smarts\/\" target=\"_blank\">more on that here<\/a><\/strong>.) I recently settled on an \u201cevery other day\u201d rule (as opposed to the \u201cevery day\u201d non-rule I had before). Every other day, I can have a medium-size cookie, half a slice of cake, or another high-sugar item. On the \u201coff\u201d days\u2014I allow myself <strong><a title=\"dark chocolate is healthy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietsinreview.com\/diet_column\/02\/nutritionists-heart-dark-chocolate\/\">a few bites of dark chocolate<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has your diet shifted?
