Last week I kicked off the gluten-free series with an overview of what gluten is and what it means to have celiac disease, meaning living a gluten-free life. One of the biggest challenges faced when trying to live gluten-free is actually avoiding gluten altogether. It is hidden in so many foods and products which can make navigating the shopping aisles extremely treacherous, especially for those suffering from celiac disease.
Below I have listed some of my favorite resources and online go-tos. I would love to hear from all of you as to what your best resources are so we can share them with everyone! Please comment or email [email protected] with your top resources. I’ll be highlighting and reviewing specific products in next week’s issue.
Living Without Magazine: This magazine and its newly launched website have been an amazing addition into my home. I honestly run to the mailbox the day it arrives as the pages are filled with recipes and articles for all that suffer from food allergies and sensitivities.
Cravings Place: Yes, we all need to have our cake and eat it too. The cravings place has pre-made mixes that are gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free and wheat-free but definitely not taste-free. All you add is water and/or oil and you’re done. My favorites are the Chocolate Chunk Cookie mix and not to be missed the Ooey Gooey Chocolatey Chewy Brownie mix.
Gluten-Free Mall: This site has everything you could ever hope for in one place. I have bought bread, pasta and even condiments here. Remember gluten can be found in ketchup! You can also sign up for their newsletter to get updates on new products coming to market and also get alerted when your favorites go on sale.
Nana’s Cookie Company: The cookies and snack bar options are delicious and in addition to being gluten-free there are no refined sugars, no hydrogenated oils, and no trans fat.
Babycakes Bakery: I know you don’t all live in the New York City area but you don’t have to anymore. Just last year Erin McKenna launched her first cookbook that details how to make all her scrumptious treats at home!!! The items are gluten-free, sugar-free and in many cases vegan. They are some of the best baked goods I have tried whether or not they are gluten-free. Check out my in-person interview with Erin as well as purchase her cookbook here: BabyCakes: Vegan, (Mostly) Gluten-Free, and (Mostly) Sugar-Free Recipes from New York’s Most Talked-About Bakery
Smart Treat: A bakery that you can buy from online. They offer gluten-free granola, breads and treats that you can have shipped to your home.
In next week’s edition of the gluten-free series, on March 13, I will take a look at specific products that contain gluten to help with your shopping navigation and also review many that I have tried. If you have any questions you would like me to address please email me at [email protected] or leave a comment below.
