I’m a huge fan of Chipotle Mexican Grill. After all, they’re one of the few fast-food chains that serve only freshly prepared and unprocessed food that is sustainably-raised. Although its ingredients are no doubt healthier and more natural than most chains, we recently took a look at the menu to see if its meals met our registered dietitian Rebecca Scritchfield’s healthy guidelines of having less than 500 calories and less than 500 milligrams of sodium, according to the the new daily sodium recommendations.
Because Chipotle has more customizable serving options, it’s very easy to mix and match your own meal, as long as you pay attention to serving size. Below are our top picks for eating at Chipotle!
Healthiest Meals at Chipotle
1. Salad with chicken and green tomatillo salsa. This romaine salad with chicken and green tomatillo salsa (ask for just a little!) is both filling and packed with nutrition. To keep the sodium count less than 500 milligrams, avoid the cheese, beans and vinaigrette that they usually serve with it. Simple is good, and the chicken is so flavorful that you won’t miss the rest! And with 485 milligrams of sodium and only 205 calories, you can easily eat this with an apple or orange and have a filling lunch.
2. Half order of black bean tacos with sour cream. Grab a friend and order three black-bean soft tacos stuffed with lettuce. Then split the order in half! Tell the good folks at Chipotle to skip the meat, rice, cheese and salsa (too much sodium!), and serve it with a side of sour cream for dipping. Then enjoy your one and a half taco with some raw veggies or fresh fruit from home! Half an order of black bean tacos with sour cream will just cost you just 255 calories and 455 milligrams of sodium.
3. Half of a fajita vegetable burrito. Yes! You can have what Chipotle is most known for — the burrito! You just have to avoid eating the whole thing. Order a full burrito with rice, fajita vegetables and a little sour cream, then cut it in half and wrap up one of the halves in a to-go bag for a future meal. The half is enough food to fill you up and has only 280 calories and 500 milligrams of sodium.
