We’re always looking for new, healthy treats to satisfy our sweet tooth, and Fiber One has delivered once again with their 90 calorie brownie bars. The health-minded company sent us a sample of their newest 90 calorie bar flavor – chocolate chip cookie – and we gave it a thorough investigation to see if it was up to our healthy standards.
For the most part these bars really are pretty good for you. Upon reading the nutrition label, we noticed that each bar contained just 90 calories, 3 grams of fat, 1.5 grams of saturated fat, 18 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of dietary fiber, 8 grams of sugar, and 1 gram of protein. Considering that this is a pre-packaged cookie, the statistics aren’t bad.
However, what we did have a slight problem with was the ingredients list. The first two items listed were “whole wheat bleached flour” and “sugar.” Anytime standard sugar is among the first few ingredients on a label, it’s bound to be fairly high in sugar. And unbleached flour always trumps bleached, in our opinion.
We do give Fiber One points for not adding any high fructose corn syrup or too many preservatives to their product. But anytime you’re consuming food that comes in a package as opposed to fresh or homemade, it will ienvitably fall short in the nutrition category.
But for dieters looking for a small treat after a meal or a light afternoon snack, Fiber One’s 90 Calorie Bars are a nice option. The overall taste was very pleasant – moist and indulgent with plenty of chocolate chips, and it didn’t leave us riding a sugar high or with any sour after tastes.
While we wouldn’t recommend making a habit of eating these bars – or other processed foods, for that matter – every once in a while poses no harm.
