The old-fashioned ideal of having mom at home and dad at work, and still being able to make ends meet (or even prosper) on one income has long been pushed aside. Sure, there are exceptions, and even in some cases like my own, there are dads who work from home with the kids, and mom is off working a traditional 9 to 5 job.
But, the modern reality of both parents working is proving to have an impact on children in relation to their weight. New research has found that the increase in moms working has a distinct relation to the rise of childhood obesity.
In an extensive study of more than 8,500 adults in the UK, who were followed since their birth in 1958, researchers found that their children were 50 percent more likely to be overweight or obese than the parents were in the 1960s.
When the researchers looked for reasons why, one factor that came up was the mothers’ full-time employment.
Even if you weren’t involved in the study, most non-experts could see that the connection to mom’s working means that there are less home-cooked meals. Less home-cooked meals means more meals-on-the-go, or fast food drive-thrus.
