Writing the food blogger segment for Diets In Review is a great gig because I get to look at gorgeous food pics and find immediate inspiration for new dinner ideas, but what I really love is when I run across bloggers who I sincerely want to meet in real life. That’s how I feel about Vicky and Ruth from May I Have That Recipe. The two sisters describe themselves as, ” Jewish-Lebanese now American-Spaniards.”
Many of the recipes are inspired by their mama who cooked with Mediterranean and Spanish flair. The result is a flavor profile you’ve never seen before, but you’ll definitely want to see more of.
Why did you start your food blog? We’ve always had a passion for food and cooking . We believe it’s a great way to bond with friends and family. We love to entertain and when we do, people often ask for our recipes. We decided to start the blog to share them, and that’s also how we got the idea for the name, “May I have that recipe”.
How would you describe your approach to eating/health? We believe that eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring. Our recipes feature all natural and seasonal ingredients, and we incorporate bold and exciting new flavors by playing with different herbs, spices and other ingredients. We grew up eating food that people might not be familiar with.
Have you always had an interest in healthy food or did it come later in life? We grew up in a household where our mom cooked homemade meals from scratch so “healthy eating” was pretty much what we were used to. For Vicky, her interest grew stronger after she moved here to the US twenty years ago. She learned more about organic and natural products and adopted a mostly vegetarian diet. For Ruth, it became a career after getting a degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. Her interest and passion to share with others just keeps growing stronger
What is your favorite (or a few of your favorites) food/ingredient to use in the kitchen? We love using seasonal, fresh ingredients. Fruits and vegetables, the more colorful the better. But some of our favorites are the ingredients that remind us of flavors of our childhood, such as pomegranate molasses, orange blossom, rose water, cardamom, etc.
Has blogging changed the way you view food and cooking? If so, how? YES! We now have to measure our ingredients before using them. We’ve always been the “a little bit of this, a little bit of that” kind of cooks, just like our mother and grandmother. So we still struggle a little bit with those measuring cups.
Favorite recipe to date? Spinach and goat cheese hashbrown nests. A delicious appetizer that is very special to us, because it was the grand prize winner of a Food.com Ready, Set, Cook! Simply Potatoes Recipe Contest
