Tune in to Dr. Oz September 25 when he explains everything you need to know about melatonin, the oft controversial sleep aid supplement. He also talks about natural stress relievers and the myths about anti-aging that are actually making you older.
Melatonin is a hormone made naturally by your body to regulate sleep patterns, but it is also made synthetically in a laboratory. Audience members on this episode learn adverse facts about melatonin, telling Dr. Oz they thought the supplements were completely safe, when in fact they could be poisoning your body. Melatonin appears to be effective short term and to help with falling asleep, but conflicting research exists to confirm that it actually helps in keeping people asleep. Higher doses of the supplement can give users bizarre dreams, drowsiness, dizziness and headaches, or interact negatively with existing medications.
Oz discusses the negative side effects of this medicine, telling viewers, “Watch this show before you take another pill.”
