Runners need only show up for Saturday morning’s 5K in Wichita and DietsInReview will make a $2.50 donation on their behalf!
We may be one of the largest health sites online with a presence across the country, but we call two places home – Wichita, Kansas and Brooklyn, New York. Last week, one of our homes, and many members of the DIR friends and family circle, were affected by the Sandy Hurricane, not to mention so many of our loyal followers. This Saturday, our editorial team, which is based in Wichita, will sponsor the first 200 runners at a special 5K event by donating $2.50 per runner to Run4NYC (up to $500). Run4NYC is raising money through virtual races across the country to support the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
“DietsInReview has called Wichita home and run our editorial team from here since we started in 2024,” said managing editor Brandi Koskie. “However, our site founder, developer, and dietitian live in Brooklyn, NY, so Sandy hit way too close to home for our tight knit DIR family last week. It’s in our nature to give back whenever we can, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to tie our two communities together.”
The fun run will take place in partnership with GoRun Wichita on Saturday, November 10 at 7:00am at Sedgwick County Park. GoRun Wichita will lead us through a 3.1 mile loop. We expect to see runners of all experience levels, including some of GoRun’s recent Start2Finish training team who completed the Prairie Fire full and half marathon.
A 5K distance, or 3.1 miles, has been selected for the run. While Run4NYC encourages a full marathon, half marathon, or 5K for these virtual races, DietsInReview.com felt a 5K would be more inviting. This will be an un-timed fun run focused on getting together to help others. Runners who need to log longer distances on Saturday can continue on.
To be counted in the donation, runners will need to see a member of the DietsInReview.com staff to log their email address. In addition to a donation per runner, DietsInReview.com will send each participant a free copy of our new eCookbook Baker’s Dozen. Prairie Fire Marathon is supplying Gatorade. And GoRun Wichita is even pitching in $500 worth of prizes for a raffle that will raise additional money for Run4NYC. A $5 donation for a raffle ticket makes runners eligible to win a variety of running gear, including new Mizuno running shoes, a Garmin ForeRunner 10 GPS watch, and a GelBot water bottle stuffed w/ Gu!
Much of Wichita’s editorial staff consider themselves runners, including the site’s running contributor and nine-time marathon finisher Lacy J. Hansen.
“We figure Wichita’s runners are out on Saturday mornings anyway, so it just makes sense to run as a group for a really great cause,” said Hansen. “After the bad rap that marathoners received last weekend in New York, we want to keep demonstrating the tremendous good runners do across our country, especially right here in Wichita!”
No matter where you live, visit Run4NYC through Sunday, November 11 to donate to and schedule your own virtual race to support Sandy relief efforts.
Wichita-area runners can visit our DietsInReview Facebook event page to RSVP and connect with other people participating this weekend, as well as stay up on the latest news for the event.
