In efforts to prevent prescription drug abuse and promote proper eco-friendly disposal of expired and unused medications lying around your house, the U.S Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and participating local law enforcement are coordinating a nationwide drug “take-back” day.
Medicines in the house are the highest cause of poisonings, flushed or trashed meds can pollute our waters, and prescription drug abuse is alarmingly high. While it’s inspiring to note that millennials use natural wellness modalities more than any other generation, teenagers who are building their prescription drug abuse problems often obtain the drugs from friends’ houses or their own homes without anybody knowing. Protect your families and environment by safely disposing of your unwanted and expired medicines by bringing them in to a DEA event collection site.
Public health and environmental experts support these take-back programs, although they recognize this will not be a permanent solution. They say the event serves more as a bandage to an ongoing need for safe ways to dispose of unwanted and expired medicine. Check out how your food, medications, and lifestyle impact your environment with the interactive Food Environment Atlas.
Accepted drugs include prescription medications, controlled substances, diet pills, all over-the-counter medications like pain relievers, medication samples, pet medications, vitamins and supplements, medicated ointments, lotions, creams, liquid medication and even homeopathic remedies.
This nationwide event does not accept needles/sharps, syringes, thermometers, infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, and hydrogen peroxide.
Visit the DEA’s event page to find a collection site near you.
